Title: What Gem Knows
Fandom: ST:TOS
Genre: Romance
Pairing: K/S
Summary: Gem the empath discovers love, with help from Spock and an unconscious Captain Kirk. K/S slash, of course.
Rating: A very very tame K.
As the doctor pricks the captain, I feel Spock's realization. He fills with resignation, and I wonder why.
Spock speaks to the doctor. I may be mute, but I understand what they are saying: Spock will go with the Vians when they return. It makes the doctor angry, but he understands Spock's logic as he walks away.
Now, Spock turns and sits beside the captain.
I'm struck by the emotions emanating from him. So far, his emotions have been tightly restrained, but now they tumble around inside of him as if he's given up the ghost.
And what emotions! I've never felt like this before. All of this...this...I don't know what it is, but it's beautiful.
Wordlessly, he's saying goodbye to the person he can't live without, and he hates himself for it. If this captain were to die, I'm certain Spock would be destroyed by the loss, and maybe he wonders if, in dying, he'll be causing the captain as much pain.
He looks up at me, then back down at his captain. A little flourish of embarrassment is what he's feeling now; he's realized that I know.
Quickly, I move around the couch and place my hand tentatively on his shoulder. My little finger brushes his neck, and I feel the little shock of his touch-telepathy. I ask what this is, this feeling that makes him hurt so much.
He calls it love, and I smile.

Author's note: This is probably my favorite K/S moment ever, and it's completely lacking in dialogue. It was hard to get into Gem's head, but I'm so glad I did, because she's amazing; one of my favorite Star Trek women. My other fave, of course, is Edith Keeler. She's the fandom favorite, though, I think.
