A/N: Just a little short fluff that came to my mind while I was at work. R&R?
"AHH!" I yelped out in anticipation of the pain as I felt my legs fly out from under me as someone slammed hard into me from the left. I landed on the ground with a resounding thud, muttering a string of curses under my breath. I was on my usual morning run through the forest and being tackled to the ground was the last thing I expected. Still lying on the ground, I whirled my body round to face the perpetrator, ready to defend myself if necessary.
"What the hell…" I began to yell but stopped when I saw the familiar face smirking at me. The face then started laughing at the look on my face, which I can only assume must have been a paradoxical combination of surprise and realization. Damn. That melodious laugh immediately
quelled my initial anger at being thrown off course but I was not about to let the other person know that. I scowled and stood up, rubbing dirt off my hands and knees and made a very exaggerated motion of wincing at the smallest of pain in my left ankle. I ungracefully hobbled off, away from the other person, pointedly ignoring her.
"Oh shit, did I hurt you?" I heard the person's laugh come to a halt as concern replaced it.
I continued hobbling away, keeping my face front, trying to stifle a giggle that threatened to escape my throat. "Not funny, Emily" I threw over my shoulder, emotionlessly.
The next moment, I felt Emily run in front of me, halting my movements and forcing me to sit down on a nearby fallen tree trunk. I kept my face impassive as she began to check my ankle, running her fingers gently over it and pressing around till I winced and let out a small painful moan.
"Shit, Paige. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. It's just that you were so cocky that day about nothing being able to frighten you that I thought that if I jumped out at you during your run, that I could prove you wrong and that it would be kind of fun but I guess I didn't really think of whether it would be safe, and now, shit, I've gotten you hurt and Coach is going to kill me as we have a meet next weekend and.." I tried my best not to laugh as I watched a panicked Emily ramble on, explaining herself but I couldn't control it and a little giggle escaped me.
She stopped and looked at me, her forehead scrunched a little like it always does when she's serious and.. I lost it. I started laughing uncontrollably. Realization soon dawn upon her and she started to laugh too, but not before shoving me off the tree trunk.
I landed on the ground for the second time this morning, but this time I did not feel the pain. All I felt was pure joy as I stared up at the beautiful tanned skin girl in front of me. Her eyes reflected the same look I had and for a moment, we just looked at each other in silence as the sounds of the forest continued around us.
She held out her hand to me and I let her pull me up. We both still had silly grins on our faces. "Are you even hurt?" She asked as I stood to my feet. I linked my fingers through hers and we started walking the rest of the path out.
I laughed. "Actually I am." A look of guilt flashed across her eyes and I quickly added, "Just a slight pull, don't worry about it, Em. I'll be fine and well enough to kick your ass at the meet next week. But try that again, and, um.. and.. " I struggled to think of a suitable threat.
"And what? What will you do to me?" She wagged her eyebrows suggestively at me.
I feigned ignorance, shrugged and instead, leaned in to kiss her. But as I felt her close the gap and our lips were just a centimeter apart, I pulled away and smirked as I watched her slowly open her eyes in confusion and slight frustration. Her lips formed a pout as I chuckled.
"That."
