Star Gazing
It was late evening. The skies had darkened, the sun had retired, and the moon had long came out to take its place. The evening was a picture of tranquility and serenity.
It was Amy's idea to bring Sheldon to go on a hiking trip with her. Sheldon refused her offer but he can't complain. This month, she is in charge for their date night. And she wants to spend some time with her boyfriend here and watch the stars.
This is going to be a romantic evening for us. She thought to herself.
They started hiking up a small hill. Sheldon walked briskly, his features set in an expression of mild annoyance, while she strolled behind him, quietly appreciating the nature of the night.
Approaching a small hilltop, she called him. "Here. You can stop."
He stopped, folding his arms, his expression cool. "Well? You can begin telling me why you insisted we came all the way out here."
She smiled cheerfully, stretching her arms. "Just wait." Sheldon is never one to be patient and laid-back, she observed. That's him, and I guess it'll always be Sheldon.
She sat down on the grass, and he settled himself beside her. Sheldon couldn't help feeling the least bit irritated at his girlfriend's antics. She insisted he came out with him, and yet won't tell him anything. Still, he was curious, but of course, he wasn't going to let her know.
A silence lapsed over them. He kept her eyes straight ahead, his hands folded on his lap. Amy just closed her eyes and enjoying the peacefulness of the evening.
He waited.
His annoyance grew. To him, he was doing nothing more than wasting time. He turned to her.
"We're just wasting..." His voice was tinted with annoyance.
"Shhh..." She hushed. "Just wait, a bit longer."
He exhaled, his breath escaping in an impatient whoosh.
A few more minutes passed.
"Amy..."
Sitting up, she interrupted him. "It's time. Look. They're here." She pointed towards the sky. He followed her gaze, and saw...
Falling stars. Glittering stars, lighting up the dark skies like fairy lights. The meteors streaked across the horizon, trails of bright lights, chasing each other, as like a mischievous game of hide and seek. It was magnificent. Nature's very own fireworks.
"It's wonderful...almost magical..." She breathed, her eyes on the meteor rain, wide with wonderment.
He, too, watched the stars. "Isn't it?" Beautiful, just like you.
"Make a wish." She urged him.
He looked at her, a skeptical expression. "Make a wish? What for? You know I don't believe in this kind of things"
"It's supposed to come true. Your wish, I mean. Whenever there are falling stars."
Shrugging, he clasped his hands together, looked towards the falling meteors, and closed his eyes. I wish…
She scooted closer to him, closing the small gap between them. She placed her head on his slender shoulders. She gently put her arms around him.
His eyes snapping open at the contact, He turned towards her, only to see her face, very near to his, and to feel a brief, tingling sensation on his lips.
He had kissed her.
Raising a hand to her mouth, touching her lips, she stared at him, her eyes wide, too shocked to react. He looked at her, a silly grin on his face, although his eyes betrayed his uncertainty.
Sheldon kissed Amy.
"Amy...I..."
"Sheldon..."
Her face was as flushed as his, she could feel it. A million thoughts were racing through her mind. He had kissed her. What did it mean? Why did he kiss her?
But he...he dared to pull her closer, and kissed her again.
And she decided to stop thinking, and kissed him back.
And around them, the stars kept falling.
