Chapter 1: Mysterious Mission
Lucy stirred the spoon slowly in the cup, watching the whipped cream dollop melt slowly into the strawberry milkshake. She didn't have much of an appetite.
She looked at her former team, they were laughing. Probably teasing Natsu, and Lisanna about their relationship because they were both blushing furiously.
It was exactly 2 years since the last Daimotou Enbu, after the incident of the dragons, Fairy Tail had partied for about a week. Everyone thought that it was Cana that deserved to be S-Class, after all, she did find Fairy Glitter, and that was the test.
Gildarts had been so happy, he had gone around Magnolia screaming
"MY DAUGHTER IS FINALLY S-CLASS! EVERYONE CELEBRATE!", and Natsu being the stupid idiot he is, joined in.
It was 1 in the morning.
Fairy Tail had gotten many very, grumpy, and tired visitors.
Cana rolled her eyes, but she was still proud of her accomplishment.
That was also the fateful day Natsu, and Lisanna got together.
Lucy should of been happy.
Keyword: should.
She was his best friend...right?
She wasn't happy though.
Since the last S-Class exam 'failed', Master Makarov had let 3 people go into S-Class. The participants were Natsu, Grey, Lisanna, herself, Bickslow, and Elfman.
It was all a race.
It was the final round.
She was so close.
She lost.
Flashback~~
Lucy was almost there. She could see it, the finish line, the large, red tape that was between 2 trees. Natsu, and Grey had already finished. She was in the lead, would she be S-Class? She grinned at the thought.
Lisanna caught up to her. They ran in silence, Lisanna occasionally going in front of Lucy, while Lucy occasionally went in front of Lisanna.
"do you think you can become S-Class?"
Lucy was surprised at her bold statement. Lucy had never really talked to Lisanna, she often only hung around Natsu, Grey, and Erza.
"y-yeah" she said, still confused at her statement.
Lisanna laughed, Lucy was taken back by it.
"you!? Your a weakling, you can't even defend yourself, without the help of Natsu, Grey, or Erza. You don't even deserve to be here, Tenroujima is the place for Fairy Tail members, not weaklings like yourself. Was Master drugged? Did you drug him? You'll always be weak" she spat.
Lucy winced "I-I'm not going to give up!"
She scowled, and then looked up to see if any lacrimas were broadcasting. They weren't.
She transformed into a bird, and jabbed at Lucy with her sharp claws. Everything went blurry, she couldn't hear Natsu, and Grey telling her to keep on trying. All she heard was herself wallowing in self-pity. She fell to her knees, her vision blurring.
She stayed like that for the rest of the race.
Natsu, Grey, and Lisanna had become S-Class. At the camp, Lisanna walked over to Lucy, and roughly yanked her to where the trees were.
"Natsu, Grey, Erza want you out"
"w-wha-"
"don't you get it!? I'm joining their team, in place of you." she pointed her finger at Lucy "they don't want a weakling on their team plus, how are they going to do S-Class missions with you on their team? You're not S-Class" She smiled "well, I have to get going to my team. See ya!"
Lucy stood wide-eyed as she processed the information. She tried to stop the tears from falling but they wouldn't stop, even after when they returned to Magnolia, and she was alone at her apartment. They just kept on falling.
Lucy got stronger, going to the forests after dark to intensely train, by defeating the monsters that passed by, she also took many missions.
Lisanna still often tormented her when no one was around. Lucy gradually began to avoid Team Natsu. She didn't even need to avoid them, only Master, and Mira acknowledged her. Everyone around her just saw Lisanna instead. She only came to the guild to get missions.
Flashback over~~
Lucy went over to the mission board, she needed to take a mission. Her eyes landed on a particular mission, hidden by 2 other papers above it. She smiled.
"perfect" she muttered
Please slay a monster terrorizing our village,
Be warned monster knows magic
Come to Monoke Village
Reward: 200,000 Jewels
"Mira" Lucy said as she went to the bartender "this one please!" she said faking her smile the best she could. Mira bought it, she stamped it.
"solo again?" she said softly
Lucy tensed "yeah, it's alright though! The solo missions are helping me a lot!" she said 'cheerfully'
Mira smiled. "Good luck Lucy"
"thanks Mira."
As Mira looked back at the paper as Lucy left she frowned as she read the paper one more time.
Lucy preferred to do missions that involved books, children, or fighting monsters. This would have to be the first time she had taken a mission like this.
Please escort a family of 5 in and out of Shekwood Forest.
Very safe, just need an escort.
Reward: 200,000 jewels
Something didn't feel right about the mission. Why would they need an escort when it was very safe? Mira just hoped that Lucy got home safety.
Lucy quickly packed and went to the station, which was unusually uncrowded. Lucy quickly shrugged the feeling off and bought a ticket.
"Shekwood Forest please" she said handing 250 jewels to the ticket seller. His face immediately paled.
"W-why in the world would you go there?" he said eyes widening, as he stumbled back in surprise.
Lucy's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "I have a mission there" she said choosing her words carefully "see?" she showed him her logo, her pride on her hand.
He visibly relaxed "okay" he said. He gave her a ticket and quickly left Lucy standing, waiting for the train.
As the train reached the station, Lucy found that there were only about 12 people on the train. Every time she would bring up Shekwood forest, the person would always find a way to end the conversation, and then they would pick a seat that was far away from her.
Lucy sighed, usually if it were team Natsu, Natsu and Grey would already started fighting, Erza would have reprimanded them, and Lucy would of watched from the sidelines laughing at Natsu, and Grey's reactions.
She stared at the scenery outside the window, it changed from fields, to valleys, mountains, and then finally, a lush green forest.
Lucy stretched her arms, and legs, yawning as she took her luggage down.
"hmm... I wonder which direction..."
Lucy arrived at a neat looking village.
She was exhausted.
After 2 days of walking she had not reached the destination.
She had been aimlessly been walking around in what seemed like circles, her supplies were about to run out.
Until she saw a small village, that looked like it had been hidden by large trees, and leaves.
Lucy mentally cheered, she walked through the village, which earned her weird looks.
Lucy giggled. Of course, she must have looked horrible with her mud stained clothes and her hasty bun, but Lucy was so relieved she didn't care.
People stared at her through covered curtains, their eyes wide with fear.
Was this stranger another one of them?
Lucy made her way to the biggest house.
"Hello?" she said curiously knocking on the wide, wooden door with a large red doorknob. The door slowly opened, and it revealed a small man, with hair that was slowly graying.
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
"What do you want!?" he said viciously "are you here the pay!? We don't have anymore! Now go! Go away! Bah!"
Lucy recoiled "N-no! Not at all! I'm looking for a place to stay, I got lost in the forest_I swear!" she said raising her arms.
"okay" he said slowly "and your not with the guild Blood Oath?"
"y-yes, I just need a place to stay for about a day."
He stared at Lucy long enough to make her feel uncomfortable.
"what is your name?"
"L-Lucy..." she said nervously
"follow me"
Lucy sat at the wooden table and stared at the bowl of porridge on it, she quietly ate it and pondered about Fairy Tail.
She wondered what mission Team Natsu was doing, and if they were fine. After she finished the bowl she laid down on the bed they provided for her.
The villagers were quite nice, after Lucy had taken a warm, hot shower, she had immediately stuck up a conversation with the village children - not making sure she was not a threat. The children 'oohhed' and 'ahhhed' at the descriptions of Magnolia.
Her town.
But Lucy didn't know why they were so afraid of her, the children had warmed up to her, but not the adults, they kept in their houses as if coming out would mean something bad would happen to them.
Lucy felt sleepy, and she yawned. She wondered if they family made it through Shekwood forest okay.
Shekwood forest is very safe anyway...
She quickly fell into a deep sleep.
"W-Why?" The old man said "Lucy is only a innocent girl. I don't understand why you made us send that fake request"
The man pounded his fists on the table as he shook with laughter "innocent!? That girl is a mage_a weak one at that. Weak enough, so she won't be able to escape."
"b-but-" the old man started.
"I want that girl alright? Bring her to the valley."
"..."
"OI!" he yelled. He grabbed the old man and shook him "either that or your precious village, which one?"
"y-yes... I'll bring the girl..." he hung his head in shame and quickly left the dark guild.
Fairy Tail
The old paper on the bar started glowing a pale, eerie, green.
"Oi Mira! Why is the paper glowing?" Natsu grinned. "A Magic trick!?" Natsu said excitingly.
Mira had been washing the plates and was about to hang them on the shelf.
"w-what!?" she said rushing to where the paper was.
By then, everyone in Team Natsu had gathered around the glowing paper.
Mira quickly scanned the request.
"Lucy took this mission..." she murmured
"Luce!? Really!? What's wrong with the paper?" Natsu said
Then all the words on the request disappeared, and in place of it was elegant writing.
Lucy Heartfillia will not be missed.
Thank you for the sacrifice.
"I-it's a joke...right?" Grey said scanning the paper in suspicion.
"It has to be! Luce is going to come back...soon!"
Mira glared at the paper
"we should talk to master"
Lucy woke happily, and smiled. She quickly washed her face, and changed her clothes. Then she packed all her belongings and stuffed them into her bag. She then tried to open the door.
Key word, tried.
"Hello? Anyone there!?" she shouted through the small peep hole, bending down to see if anyone was outside. "My doors locked, hello!?"
Lucy was too busy banging on the door to notice the pale wisps of smoke that was coming in from under the door, and when she did, her eyes widened and she quickly grabbed a shirt from her backpack and covered her mouth with it.
"Somebody help! There's a strange smoke coming from under my doo-"
Lucy fell with a 'thud' onto the floor.
Outside the door was the chief of the village with his right ear pressed onto the door. When he heard the familiar 'thud' he grimaced.
It was time.
Master Makarov slowly walked onto the stage, his face filled with sadness, remorse and regret.
The guild members looked at their master with interest, and curiosity. Mira cried into her hands, and Team Natsu had stood on the stage looking guilt-ridden.
Makarov spoke slowly, his fist clenching with every word.
"My children..." The guild members looked at each other, and braced themselves for the very bad news.
"Lucy Heartfillia...is dead."
