She's always done things by the book; it's easier that way. She knows that when she does things precisely, she is in control- and she needs that security in her life.
When it comes to him, however, she feels lost- as though she missed the page that covered how to handle boys like him. She wishes she could be straightforward with him, let him know how much he frustrates her, but she is afraid she'll lose him. As much as his presence upsets her perfectly balanced life, she needs him around.
And he doesn't even know how much he hurts her. Her heart tightly clenches each time she sees him hug or kiss or even look at another girl- because that girl isn't her. Then suddenly she's angry at him for making her feel this way. She had been so content with her lot in life, so content with doing things by the book until he came along.
But now she finds herself unsatisfied with everything- with being the brain, the friend who steps to the side and watches while others experience life. And even though she knows her part, knows that she isn't pretty, knows that she'll never have the knight with his white horse, she wishes for more. She wishes that she could rewrite herself into the type of person she'd like to be- into the type of person he'd move mountains for.
And she knows that she should wait for him to make the first move, because that's what girls are supposed to do. She reminds herself that girls aren't to be the forward ones, so as not to appear brazen or brash. But she's tired of waiting and she's starting to wonder if her chance is passing her by.
She's always done things by the book, but what if the book doesn't have all the answers?
