Prologue
Journal #76-200X-31-09 of the Age of Recovery
Today marks the yearly anniversary of the end of the Age of Prominence on earth. Though humans tend to take this fact for granted, the earth is a very old planet. How old is still a mystery and I've been around for a long time. You see, I'm an immortal being who once had great power. But unlike those who like to exploit their power for personal gain, I used my power to help mankind as best as I could, as did most of my kind who had the same power as me and had the same intentions for all things good. Of course, we, from time to time, were helpers to the world of humans and the humans accepted us. Though these humans tended to do things by themselves, they gladly took any help from my kind if the job seemed more difficult.
The power I once wielded was limitless.
I was once known as Bolton the Blue, the fairy wanderer.
Even before I was born, humans and fairies co-existed on earth and the existence of my kind was public knowledge.
Fairies were, and I believe still are, very popular with children who are amused and amazed because our power. A friend of mine once told me that fairies feed off the joy of the young, that their happiness is the reason why fairies are so powerful. Maybe fairies felt powerful because of that joy. It was sort of a reward to make children happy.
As for the adults, some of them saw Fairy-Kind as a means to an end. They all wanted their kingdoms to be more prosperous and powerful than the other and many fairies were happy to oblige the wishes of the adults. Fairies would often provide the humans with magical tools to build their kingdoms. With those tools, mighty Kingdoms came to be, each one of them very beautiful and majestic. Humans and fairies alike took pride at the kingdoms that were built.
Fairies were not above taking sides because they always had a favorite kingdom. In fact, fairies established their own towns within these kingdoms. I myself was from Star Town, which was located in the kingdom of Kaliope. As fairies, we could not interfere directly with human destiny, but we can help shape that destiny and let the humans do what they have to do.
I ashamed to say that in the Age of Prominence on Earth, the fairies did more harm than good. You see, fairies also provided very powerful weapons to the kingdoms they resided in. These weapons were used not just to overpower other kingdoms, but to completely eradicate them off the face of the earth. The fairies of the world were so eager to see their human kingdoms succeed that they became blind to the suffering that was happening to their favorite kingdoms.
The fairies of the world, and the representatives of each fairy town of earth, came together one day to discuss and debate about the situation on earth. I was there to witness the event and by then I was 10 centuries old, by Star Town reckoning of course. The event was no different than a human meeting of many nations. The fairy representatives argued and argued as to who was in the right. After an hour, there was still no solution to the war crisis on earth and I was fearing that a world war might erupt.
One thing I noticed during this entire affair, through all this madness, was a young fairy with white hair that was sitting among the crowds of people that witnessed the meeting. I remembered him well because of how angry he looked during the meeting. As the fairies argued, the white haired fairy grew so angry that his teeth were gritting and his scowl grew to lengths that I could not even fathom. At the time, I did not know the name of this fairy, but I could tell that he would play a part in human destiny.
It would only be centuries later that this white haired fairy, who I came to know as Yknib, would show his hand.
It was one day that that the human kingdom of Fenton was attacked by a then unknown force. Fenton's fairy town Crystalton was also destroyed. From what I heard, this force was so powerful that not even the fairies of Crystalton could stop it. The fairies of Crystalton were quick to blame their rivaling cities for this but those cities denied any wrongdoing. I knew something was happening and I feared that it was bigger than any petty rivalry.
Then, more Kingdoms, as well as their fairy towns, began to fall at the hands of this unknown force. What were once prosperous kingdoms were no more. The humans, even with the weapons the fairies had provided them, could not hope to stop this unknown force. The only thing they could do, after their kingdoms were destroyed, was to babble on about a white haired sprite with a deep black star wand that showed no mercy at destroying everything in the kingdom. Even my home of Star Town was not safe from this menace.
Any squabbling that went on between the fairies of the world were set aside as they went to combat this menace themselves. I was one of the fairy soldiers of the United Fairy Army, Star Town Division. Together, the fairies took the fight to Yknib.
When we found him in the Deep Canyons (The Grand Canyon today), Yknib made his intentions clear: he wanted to make humanity suffer for causing the division among fairies. Yknib also blamed humanity for using Fairy-Kind for their own ends and abused the power that was given to them. He made it also clear that he wanted to make the earth his and the humans would be his slaves that worshiped only him.
Though it was a tough battle, the United Fairy Army was able to subdue Yknib. He was charged and found guilty for crimes against the humans. Yknib was sentenced to spend eternity in a pocket universe where nothing existed except the darkness. From what I heard, the key to that pocket universe was destroyed and there was no hope in unlocking it.
Things were never the same after Yknib's destruction. The humans have begun to resent Fairy-Kind. Some of them began to hate fairies, even those who trusted them in the past. We were persecuted, hunted, and no one, not even the children who adored us in the past, saw us in the same light. They wanted nothing to do with us and they wished that they wanted us gone forever.
And so, the fairies of the world got together and cast a spell over every human being on earth. The humans forgot about us, as if we never existed. The fairies then proceeded to construct their own pocket universe, which they deemed Fairy World, their new home away from the humans.
Though all the other fairies decided to go to their new world, I decide to stay on earth and observe the humans and how they would do in the absence of Fairy-Kind.
In fear that I would be tempted to use my powers, I channeled every ounce of it into a single wand. The only power that was left in me was my immortality and the fact that I would no longer age beyond my current state. I hid the wand deep within a cave and sealed it until the right time. Though the threat of Yknib was contained, who knew if his menace would come again, and someone had to rise to meet that threat.
The centuries after the Age of Prominence of Earth were dark ones. The humans, in forgetting about the fairies, have also forgotten to do everything else. The humans struggled and were, in my opinion, at a loss of what to do or how to do it. They could not even speak properly or do the tasks that they would do even without our presence. It is like they became animals with no direction. It would be centuries before anything resembling a society was built.
It would also be centuries until I saw a fairy here on earth. From what I understood in talking to one of them, fairies were only there as Fairy Godparents to children that needed happiness in their lives. When the fairy godparent was no longer needed or when the child reached adulthood, the fairy would leave the child and any memories the child had with the Fairy Godparent was erased from his/her memory. There was also a price to pay if the child reveals the existence of his/her fairy godparent, which involves getting the fairy taken away and the child's memories erased.
If anything, the Age of Recovery of Earth, which continues to this day, has been a trying one. As societies grew, new kingdoms were built. As kingdoms grew, more wars were fought. And right now, there is a tension on this planet that might prevent the New Age of Prominence to occur.
As for me, I continue to wait until the day when a hero will rise to save humanity with the very wand I created. Though I am no longer a fairy, I still follow the rule that I should not interfere directly with human destiny. Whoever should save this world, whether it be the threat of Yknib or something else, this world's savior should be someone of this world. Whoever that human may be, he/she should be a beacon of hope, one that rises above the clouds and conquers fear in the face of evil.
Until that day comes, I guard the wand of my own creation in a cave located in the Bleak Forests outside of Dimmsdale...
To be continued...
Author's note: My plan for this fanfic is to make a spin-off to the Fairly Odd Parents series. I'll admit that some of FOP fanart from DevianArt has given me some inspiration for this fic. Anyway, read and review and tell me what you think of this back-story.
