promises kept Companion piece to Another life

"Class,we have a new student today." Ms Makintosh announced brightly to her first grade class. "Her name is DG"
She gestured for the small girl to step forward.
"You must be nervous. A new town,a new school"
DG shook her head. "No. I was nervous that time Az and me went into the woods and the bear came. But new things don't frighten me"
"DG,why don't you tell us a little about yourself?" Ms Makintosh prompted " Where are you from"
"The O.Z. But my great great grandma is from here." DG answered promptly.
Ms Makintosh s smile faltered.
"What about your parents? Are they from California too"
" was born in the O.Z. Daddy is from Ne-ber-sca "
"And what is your fathers job?" Ms Makintosh valiantly continued.
"He s the king. " DG replied, wondering why this lady wanted so much information.
"I thought he was a farmer"
"Oh!" DG brightened, finally understanding. "That's Hank, one of my nurture units. Hes from Milltown"
"Ah. Well Uh DG why don't you go have a seat there is an empty one by Kyle"
"Why cant Toto teach me anymore?" DG interjected. She was very fond of her old teacher.
"Well,Hes not here." Ms Makintosh explained. After this interview, she was beginning to consider retirement.
"Oh"
"But I'm your teacher now"
"What kind of animal do you turn into?" DG asked brightly "Excuse me"
DG took a deep breath. Of course, she hadn't been expecting someone with the brilliance of Ambrose, but she didn't expect her new teacher to be absolutely slow.
"What-Kind-Of -Animal-Do-You-Turn-Into?" DG asked couldn't believe she had to spell it out.
Ms Makintosh backed into the chalkboard. "T-take your seat DG"
DG curtsied and sat where she had indicated. Perhaps Ms Makintosh wanted to make it a surprise.
DG sat at the lunch table picking at her food. She had sincerely hoped for a nice cup of Muglug and perhaps some grog. Instead she got-well she was afraid to guess really- and 'tater tots'. When she had inquired about Muglug, the lunch lady stared at her like shed grown an extra head.
"You okay GB?" the girl nearest her asked.
"I miss my sister Az. And my friend Ambrose"
"Those are funny names"
"Are not"
"Are too! What kind of a name is Ambrose"
"Dont laugh at Ambrose, hes very smart and makes the best Muglug! "
"You're weird and your friends are weird"
DG spent recess alone.
"Somewhere over the rainbow way up high, there's a land that I heard of once in a..once in a once in uh"
"Lullaby" A familiar voice whispered.
"Ambrose!" DG spun around. "Shh not so loud Princess" Ambrose looked over his shoulder.
"Did you come to take me home"
Ambrose shook his head. "Sorry D. You have to stay here a little bit longer"
"But you'll come soon"
Again,Ambrose shook his head. "I wont be the one who brings you back. Your mother told me to give you this"
He opened a brown bag and sprinkled its glittery contents over the small girl.
"When you wake up tomorrow, you wont remember the O.Z. as any more than a dream"
"But when I get back"
"Ill be there help you remember.I promise"
DG nodded.
"I gotta get back. Its not safe. And my escort-Cain," he nodded to a Tin man standing a few feet away. "He wants to get back and see his family." Cain smiled to DG,eyes could see he had an open and loving heart.
"Ill see you really soon, okay?" Ambrose nodded.
DG smiled and walked away. Even though she would soon forget everything, at the moment she could remember something important. Ambrose always kept his promises.
