Day Off

"Come on," he pleads, smile lighting his features, making his eyes glint, "Last thing I'll ask you to do, then we can go home. Promise."
"Will, this is ridiculous," she laughs.
"Please."
Damn him. He's giving her that look, and she knows she's already lost. She never could resist those eyes, and he knows it, uses it to his advantage far too often. She loves him for it.
"One time," she relents.
His smile widens and he grabs her hand, tugging her toward the row of swings on the far side of the playground.
Shaking her head, she allows him to pull her across the park. She hadn't wanted to come when he suggested they take the day off, go for a walk. It was late autumn, bordering on winter, growing chilly, each breath sending faint puffs of steam into the air; she would have preferred spending the rare quiet time curled in the library with a decent book, or so she had thought. However, he had been insistent, and she had caved. She is glad she did.
Already, he had managed to get her on the merry-go-round and the giant slide, but she has been resisting the swings. They had once been a favorite of hers, but since Ashley…"Will, I haven't been on a swing in years," she protests half-heartedly.
Suddenly, he's behind her, his breath hot against her ear, "I know."
He pushes her forward, turning her and settling her on the swing. Instinctively, her fingers curl around the rusty chains. "Will, please, another day," she appeals, hoping he'll step back, give her an out.
"Today," he whispers gently.
Will moves behind her, pulling her back and shoving the swing forward, pushing her. She closes her eyes tightly, but after a few moments, she can't resist cracking them open. Will steps to the side, mischievous gleam in his eye as he watches her. It's then she realizes she had wanted to swing after all, despite her protests.
"Jump."
"What? I will not. I would like to keep some of my dignity."
"Jump," he repeats.
Finally, she nods taking a deep breath, she closes her eyes and lets go. She lands on her feet, but promptly falls on her butt, laughing, the sound rich and genuine.
Eyes sparkling, Will crosses to her offering his hand. Still chuckling she takes it, leaning into him as his arms wrap around her. Smiling up at him, she admits softly, "This is the most fun I've had in years, Will. Thank you."
Crooking a finger under her chin, he tips his head to kiss her tenderly. "Anytime," he whispers against her lips.
"Let's go home," she murmurs, threading their fingers together.
