Disclaimer: I don't own One Tree Hill or it's characters
Haley has always thought she lived a boring life. One rainy night changed that. She never expected to find him on the side of the road. The only thing she doesn't know is the fact that her new pet happens to be a shape shifting vampire.
I know this is a crazy idea but please let me know what you think and let me know if you want me to continue on with this story.
Chapter 1: Waking Dream
The rain pounded down on her windshield as she drove the deserted streets of Tree Hill. All around her were trees and she could hardly see the road.
The party had been a bore. But it wasn't like she wasn't expecting it to be. Nothing exciting ever happened in Tree Hill. All the parties were the same. Brooke dragged her there then went to flirt with the guys on the football or basketball team. She was left alone until Lucas showed up to keep her company.
She'd been dating Lucas for a while now and she didn't know if she really saw a future with him. She loved him but she didn't know if that was enough though.
Her phone rang in her purse and she grabbed it. She searched aimlessly in the dark through her purse until she caught sight of the light from her phone. She grabbed it in time to answer. "Hello?" she asked
"Hales?" Lucas said. Who else would it be, he called her. He was wasted, she could hear it in his voice.
"Of course it's me Luke," she told him, "who else would it be."
"Why'd you leave the party?" he asked.
She sighed and rolled her eyes. "Because it was boring Lucas. All the parties are the same and I wasn't having any fun."
She turned her head to the direction of the road and saw the shadow of something run out to the road. She quickly swerved the wheel. The car turned on the slick road and finally came to a stop.
She still had the phone to her ear and she could hear laughing and loud talking in the background. She hung up her phone and looked out the window. She'd almost hit something. But what? It looked like it could have been a dog. She opened the glove box and pulled out the flashlight she kept in there.
She put her hood over her hair and opened the door. The rain now pelted her as she walked out to the road. She turned the light on and looked around but didn't see anything. She shone the light in the direction of the thick trees that surrounded the road.
She turned around and jumped when she saw a dog standing on the side of the road. It was a large Husky with white and black fur. It just stood there. It didn't make a move to come near her and it didn't look like it was going to run away.
She looked around to see if there was someone around that maybe the dog belonged to but she didn't see anyone. She took a cautious step towards it but again the dog didn't move. She put her hand out and whistled for it to come to her. "Come on," she encouraged.
The dog took a step towards her and she whistled again for it to come closer. When the dog was in front of her she put her hand on top of his head. "Where did you come from?" she asked, knowing she wouldn't get an answer. She scratched his scalp which he seemed to enjoy.
She didn't know what she was supposed to do with a dog now. He didn't have a tag on and she thought she could take him home with her until she found his home. She walked towards her car, "come on," she told him and he soon followed after. She opened the back door and he jumped into the seat.
She got back in the front seat and started the car again. She started driving down the road again and looked back in the mirror at the dog in the backseat. "What am I going to do with you?" she asked.
Haley got home and pulled into the garage of her house. It was still pouring outside. She opened the back door and he jumped out. They walked through the door and into the brightly lit house. "I'm home!" she yelled. She knew her parent's would still be up. They stayed up later than her most of the time.
Sure enough when she walked into the living room she saw her parents in the living room with SNL playing on the TV. "You're home early," her mom said. Haley nodded. "Yeah and um… I actually brought someone home."
"Who?" he dad asked.
She turned around and didn't see the dog that had been at her side since she'd found him. "Um," she said, "hold on." She walked into the hall and back towards the front door. There he sat on the rug in front of the door. "Come on," she said and he stood up quickly and followed her.
"This is who I brought home," she said and her parent's looked at the black and white husky that sat at her side. "What?" her mother asked, "and where did you find him?"
"On the side of the road. I almost hit him and he doesn't have any tags or anything so I thought that maybe I could take him home until we found out where he lived."
"Haley," her father said and the dog looked up at her, "you know how you are. You'll get attached to him and then when you can't have him anymore…" he trailed off.
"Dad!" she yelled, "what do you want me to do? Bring him back to the side of the road and leave him there?"
"Of course not honey," Lydia James said, "but we just don't want you to get too attached."
"Well what about this," Haley said absent mindedly scratching the dog's scalp again, "what if I keep him? I mean we'll see if anyone claims him and if not… I could keep him."
"I don't know," Jimmy said.
"Please daddy."
"She's using daddy," Lydia said, "she must really want him."
She bit her lip waiting for her dad's response. She could already tell that her mother was ok with idea. "Fine," he said, "but you better take care of him."
"Of course I will, I'm responsible." She smiled at the two of them and walked out of the room with the dog coming up behind her. She walked up the stairs and down the hall to her room. She turned on the lights and shrugged off her jacket. She threw it over the back of her chair.
"What should I call you?" she asked, "I mean you have to have a name." She sat on her bed and patted the spot next to her and he jumped up on her bed. "Hmm," she said, thinking about a name, "what about… Duke." She smiled, "I think I like that." She got off her bed and walked over to her dresser.
She pulled out a pair of sweatpants that said RAVENS down the leg in royal blue. She unbuttoned her jeans and pushed the wet material off her legs. She pulled on the black sweatpants and changed into a long sleeve royal blue t-shirt.
She turned on her iPod and crawled into bed. She turned off light and soon fell asleep.
Nathan turned back into his normal form after he heard her breathing evening out. He moved from the end of her bed. He stood next to her bed and looked down at her sleeping form. He moved the hair away from her neck and let his lips graze across her skin. "I probably shouldn't do that," he whispered, "it's too tempting."
She turned over on her side and was facing him now but her eyes remained closed. He smirked and said, "sleep well Haley James."
