Author's Note: My first attempt at a Yu-Gi-Oh fanfic. This is a one-shot about what Yami thinks when Yugi takes his place to leave the puzzle in the second-to-last season (not sure what show it is); could be non-slash or pre-slash, a little fluffy.
Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh, nor am I making any profit off of this.

It was difficult for the pharaoh to focus on anything that was going on around him. He simply shut down and withdrew into himself, not paying any mind to his friends, Kaiba, everyone.
The pain that pulled him deeper and deeper into depression wasn't only in his heart, or his mind, but throughout his entire body. It became too exhausting to move and speak, and so the once great King of Egypt sank back into his chair and took the abuse and insults of others.
He did this because he felt he deserved it. Yugi and he had always been a team, always worked together, even if it wasn't during a duel. And then, after everything the two of them had been through, he had selfishly pushed Yugi aside and played one of the most dangerous cards in the entire game of dueling. He hadn't thought about the consequences, about the risk of losing and being taken away, or winning the duel but also losing Yugi's trust for good.
No, all the pharaoh could think about was winning the duel. It was the same as it had been back in Duelist Kingdom, when he and Yugi had to win against Kaiba in order to go inside and defeat Pegasus. Yugi had stopped trusting him then, holding him back when they dueled Mai. Like this time, back then he felt that it was OK to win by any means necessary as long as they won. He never once thought about what could happen to everyone else.
And yet their friends still thought there was hope in getting Yugi back. He couldn't see how – they didn't even know where he was, much less how to get him back. It was a pointless hope.
But part of him wished they were right. A small part of him silently prayed that, by letting the others take the lead and going along with what they were doing, they'd eventually figure out how to get him back. Part of him prayed it would work.
He prayed….

This came out way shorter and mushier than I had originally intended it to be, but it would have bothered me constantly if I didn't post it. Some names may be spelled wrong, or some info incorrect – I haven't watched the show in ages, but I hope it's alright.
