Changes

James was surprised at the emptiness within him. He often stood overlooking the sea, to reflect on the moment Will decided to leave with the pirates.

James had felt like a father to him, when first that soaked and scared boy appeared on his ship. He had watched him grow, taught him to fight, and showed him how to be polite to the ladies.

James chuckled. He had almost taught him too well and nearly lost the love of his life. With a sigh, James turned to find Elizabeth making her way towards him.

He smiled against the fading sunlight.

James pulled her close to him and kissed her slowly and deeply. He smiled again when Elizabeth blushed.

"Are you alright, James?"

James placed his chin on her soft hair. "Yes."

"Sometimes, I think you miss him more than I do." Elizabeth smiled, knowing he knew her heart was safe with him.

He glanced down at her. "I'm sorry…I spent so many years with him, he felt like a son… or a younger brother."

"Perhaps you can feel like that again someday." Her eyes twinkled as James looked down at her. She gazed warmly back and hope flared within him.
