"Master?"
"Yes Anakin,"
"I know."
Obi-Wan looked up from his readings with a frown. Ever since Naboo he'd never been able to escape analyses. "Know what, Anakin?"
"I know you love Padme."
A smile tugged at the Master's lips. "Much is she a sister to me."
There was silence as Anakin pondered the statement, and Obi-Wan turned back to his readings.
"You know, Master, I wouldn't mind if you got married."
"Married? To Padme?"
Anakin nodded, the very thought exciting him -: His Angel and his Master under the same roof? Priceless!
"Anakin, love is a mysterious force," Kenobi stated, getting serious. He dug for something under the many files spread on the table. "And under certain circumstances it is not - "
"But Padme's a Queen!" The boy argued. "And you're a Jedi!"
Obi-Wan found what he was looking for. "Exactly my point. It is duty that comes first. My duties as Jedi and her duties as Queen will forever keep us in our places." He settled back with a pen to brief the files.
Anakin studied his Master from the couch, always working without thought of rest. In fact he could never remember a time when Obi-Wan Kenobi rested.
"Do you love her?"
The two men held a long look. Finally Kenobi broke the silence by saying simply, "She is as dear a sister to me as you are my apprentice." He escaped Anakin's gaze by glancing towards the clock by the wall. "Now, off to bed. It's getting late."
The boy got up and walked to the hallway, reluctant to retire for the night. "Master,"
"Yes Anakin?"
"I know she loves you."
"I think your romantic sensibilities are getting the better of you tonight, Anakin Skywalker." Came the slightly exasperated reply.
"I know it."
"Bed, Annie."
Anakin walked farther and paused at his bedroom doorway. "Padme loves you . . . Goodnight, Master."
"Night Anakin."
Obi-Wan then placed his files down, buried his face in his hands and waited for the close of Anakin's door before raising his head, resting it on his cupped hands. "And I wish she did."
