Because inspiration struck me with a hammer and ran off with my wallet.
What happens when a God dies?
Are they reborn? Does their title and powers pass to another? Do they simply disappear?
No one knows the answers, and try as I might, I have yet to arrive at one either.
But I didn't want to risk Amaterasu disappearing.
Amaterasu was head strong and stubborn, but she did not possess the limitless power she once had; Shiranui's visit from the past proved that in an instant.
But Amaterasu was determined to save us all. She couldn't help it. She loved everything that the sun's rays touched. All that she hated, were the beings that refused to leave the darkness of the shadows, and harmed the beings protected by her light.
I didn't want her to disappear.
That's why, when the sun started fading, signalling the beginning of the day of darkness, I cast her image across a strip of canvas. So that even when her rays of protection vanished, the natural glow she gave would still exist here in the plain of mortals.
Yes, I had told her to leave, but that was because Amerterasu's a Goddess; the Goddess of all Origin and Goodness. How could a divine creature, a being so pure, be happy upon the plain of men? Something like that is impossible, and I feared the chance that she would become corrupted by the darkness of man.
I did not want the snow white wolf to become as black as sin. I did not want to risk Amaterasu to the true plague that this plain holds.
Little Lika saw the strip of canvas as snatched it from me, until I made one for her too, and then Kai wanted one, and it grew. I saw the praise coming from them, and flying up in the direction the ark had gone. Did you get it, I wonder?
Soon after, everyone, and I do mean everyone, heard the howl of pain.
You made that wail, didn't you Amaterasu? I recognised your voice right away. Who, or what, could be hurting you so badly?
Yami. I heard someone murmur.
Yami, the emperor of the realm of darkness, opposite Amaterasu. Controller of all that escapes the touch of the sun's rays. Ruler of everything man deems to be evil.
Divine beings are not born good or evil. Man, in choosing favour with one divine creature over another, deems the forgotten as evil, dark and manipulative.
Amaterasu would be known as the Origin of all darkness and evil did people choose not to pray to her.
She would not be the guardian on the sun. Man would believe that she instead wished to steal that position from another.
Man can twist everything to fit their own desires and stories.
As I watched more praise fly towards the sun's protector, I found myself knowing that even if she were treated like a devil, imp, or demon, even if she were ostracised from all men, women and children, even if she wee all alone, Amaterasu would fight for the sake of the mortal plain, not against it. That's just how it is. That's just how the world works.
Amaterasu will protect everything she can, for forever and a day.
That's just how she is. I'll keep on painting her, even after my eyes go blind and my brush grows weak.
I would really do it.
For Ammy, taught me the meaning of truth.
And it is not something that just anybody can teach you.
