Hello! This is from the Digi-Drabble Tag on the Digimon Fanfiction Challenges! :) Prompts were synchronicity, moon, dream.

So this takes place somewhere between Renamon's first digivolution (where she and Rika start to properly bond) and the Devas' arrival. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: I don't own Digimon. Lord knows how much it would cost to run Hypnos...

Sugar Moon

"Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?" - Alfred Lord Tennyson

Rika wasn't entirely sure what to make of the dreams. They were beautiful, enchanting, exciting, and terrifying.

She had been to many battles with Renamon at that point, witnessing her kitsune tear apart and absorb her foes. But in these dreams (visions?) she was Renamon, all golden fur and effortless grace. She felt the Diamond Storm attack crystallize around her, the white shards shining like miniature moons. The wind streaked over her body. Crisp air rushed into her lungs. Pain from failed evasions stabbed to the core of her being.

But digivolution (did she do it herself?) was the most exquisite feeling, as raw energy and power flooded her and transformed her into Kyuubimon. She didn't even care that she was forced onto all fours: that almost made it even more exhilarating. She danced around whatever foe she was facing (it never mattered), and extinguished them with her blessed fire. As the shattered data rushed into her, as the sheer power rushed through her like sugar, she would roar like a beast (she was a beast) to the emerging starry sky.

This is me! she would think in the wildness of the moment, as the entire world seemed to bow toward her. I have become strong! And I will grow stronger and stronger! Even gods will fear me! Even-

And then Rika would wake, alarm clock shrieking beside her, and she would spend the next couple of minutes sorting out who she really was. Sometimes it took longer than that. Sometimes (especially lately) she would be halfway through the school day before she fully realized that she was Rika Nonaka, Tamer, human.

Then she felt her heart and stomach knot up with anxiety for almost forgetting her identity. Was this what it was like for Takato and Henry and their Digimon partners? Such a strong synchronicity that it seeped into your dreams, and then into your life? She wondered if Renamon had dreams of being a human, but something kept her from asking. What boring dreams those must be, though.

She said she wanted strength, and she and Renamon were certainly getting stronger together, but this...was it worth it? Part of her wanted to slap herself: of course it was worth it! Few others had the fate to be graced by a live Digimon and be their partner. They even protected others from the bad Digimon, though that was more of a bonus than a goal. And the dreams, while so disturbingly lingering, were so...

But then another, perhaps timid, perhaps childish part of her would ask: But what if one day the dream is so sweet, so powerful, so wonderful, that you never wake up?

So, this is basically leading up to certain things much later in the series, with Rika and Renamon beginning to sync. Rika's both intimidated and fascinated by it, and doesn't really know if it's a good or bad thing at this point. Rika is so stubborn sometimes.

Well, hope you enjoyed! Feel free to leave a review!
