"Eliza Bennett!" a voice from behind me shrieked.
I turned around to face Caroline Bingley, Jane's sister in-law. I hadn't seen her in almost a year but she hadn't changed a bit, she still had her bleached blonde hair and fake nails to go with her fake smile.
"Caroline!" I replied, smiling tightly at her.
I hitched my bag higher on my shoulder and she shrieked, grabbing my hand and examining it. "Your engaged!" she screeched. I nodded, "How long?"
"About a month," I answered.
"Oh, I'm so happy for you! Just think this time last year you and your sister were both single."
I ignored the jibe and answered, "Yes, well I guess we're both lucky."
Her retort was cut off by another yell, "Elizabeth! Who are you…Caroline! Nice to see you!"
Will Darcy, my fiancée hid his displeasure at seeing Caroline very well. She might not have noticed, but I did.
"William!" she screeched, reaching up to hug him. He stepped back. Hiding her confusion, she said, "William, did you know that Eliza's getting married?"
I winked at him when he met my gaze, "yes, I did know. I hear the guy is great, really funny and charming."
I snorted, trust Will to milk the situation for all its worth.
Caroline chatted with Will for a few moments, he kept trying to include me in the conversation while she kept trying to exclude me. It was very amusing.
After a few moments, I caught Will's eyes and tapped my watch, indicating we were late.
He nodded, "Caroline, I sorry, but I must leave."
"Oh that's fine! Eliza and I were just going to go out for coffee when you arrived!" she lied, glancing at me.
"Actually, Caroline, but I really must be off too. Wedding plans," I added, answering the question I knew she'd ask.
Looking defeated, Caroline nodded, and Will and I turned to leave the store.
"So," I began, loud enough for Caroline to hear us. She was walking a little ways behind us, obviously listening. "What took so long?"
"Stuff to clear up," He answered. After a moment he continued, "How does Hawaii sound?"
"For what?"
"Our honeymoon, of course."
Behind us we heard Caroline gasp and heard the bag she was carrying fall to the ground with a 'thump'. "No," she whispered.
I turned around and smiled sweetly at her, "Our wedding's in June, I hope you can make it!"
