Rise of a Legend

Chapter 1

A firm first impression

Looking up at the blazing sun he sighted heavily. It was scorching hot. The fine sand crept trough the smallest opening in his clothes and left him with an unpleasant and itchy feeling. He was grateful he didn't wear chainmail like the caravan guards did. He couldn't comprehend how they were able to withstand the heat. It was almost certain you'd burn your hand if you touched it as you could see the hot air quivering around them.

When he looked down at the swaying back of his horse he could see nothing but sand, sand and more sand. The only thing witch changed the monotone landscape were the oases. But they were scarce and far apart.

"This has been going on for 2 weeks now. I feel like I'm going crazy of boredom." He moaned.

He heard some commotion at the front of the long row of men, donkey's, camels and horses. When he stood up in his saddle to see what was going on he noticed the tips of some palm trees sticking above a large sand dune.
It was decided to take a break there, as the sun was at its hottest now.

A small oasis. Nothing more than a couple of trees, some dense bushes and a well in the middle of it all. The air was soon filled with sounds. Camels groaning, men shouting, the sound of running water.
He walked to a freshly filled water bag and poured the content over his head. He felt immediately better as the cool water washed away the sweat and sand from his face while slowly running down his back making him shiver.

After he had a drink he headed back to the shadows of the tree he had tied his horse to. Resting his back against the tree he watched as everyone began to settle down to avoid the relentless midday sun. He felt his eyes grow heavy until they eventually closed.

He woke up by sudden noise. When he opened his eyes he looked around in confusion what was going on. He saw men running back and forth.
"Dam" he said to himself while rubbing his hair "how long have I been asleep".
He jumped up and ran to the caravan master, who was standing at the edge of the oasis with a couple of his men next to him.
He was a big sturdy man whose face was hidden behind a big brown beard. His dark eyes looked into the world with a grim stare. He was deffinetly an experienced merchant who has traveled the dessert many times as the relentles sand, wind and head had left deep grouves in his face.
As he asked what was going on he simply pointed at the horizon. There you could see a big dust cloud forming.
"Bandits?" he asked.
The caravan master simply nodded and said "Probably Khergit. Welcome to Calradia boy. "
