The Dragon and the Lioness
Chapter 1: In which Liam worries
Author: Keladry of New Hope
Liam Ironarm, Dragon of Shang looked down at his sleeping lover with a sigh. The silly little idiot had gone up into the mountain during a blizzard for a JEWEL a magical jewel, no less. He sighed and looked down at the unconscious redhead. He loved her so much some times it felt as if his was going to burst with it. He shifted his position and remembered his sister, his older sister. Alayna. Bright, beautiful, wilful, stubborn and impetuous. She also had a strong gift. And it was her gift that had killed her. A few days before the Shang Bear had come to the village she'd been practising a fire spell when Liam had bounced in and distracted her. He shivered remembering. She'd only been distracted for a moment but it was enough. Her gift had turned on her and consumed her. When the glow of magic faded all that was left of his sister was a pile of ashes and a scrap of blue cotton.
Liam pricked up his ears from the common room below he could hear the first strains of The Tireless Beggar. He made a face "I'd better go and rescue the patrons from Coram" he remarked to no one in particular. He was halfway to the door when he remembered something. A few days ago Alanna's pregnancy charm had fallen off her chain while she was practicing. He'd been meaning to give it back to her so he placed it on her bedside table as he hurried out of her room and down the stairs as the song got steadily louder, a small smile on his lips.
