Please Note: This is not a song-fic but does reference a song - "Tea for Two" music by Vincent Youmans; lyrics by Irving Caesar (duet from the 1925 musical "No, No, Nanette") and later preformed by Doris Day and Gordon MacRae in the 1950 move, "Tea for Two."

Raindrops pelted the window even as the afternoon's light shone though the gray clouds overhead. In the hearth, a crackling fire chased out the chill. Softly, slowly, the first movement of a sonata da chiesa floated throughout the room, the musical notes, sad and sweet at once.

The older gentleman watched the sky, lost somewhere in a poignant nostalgia. Days like this reminded him of just how much had been sacrificed.

There was a time when life had been so much simpler, a time long before their world had been tainted by war. So many friends and loved ones lost.

A knock at the door drew his attention and he sighed before calling out his permission for the interlouper to enter.

"I thought I might find you here," Allura's voice was filled with melancholy as she crossed the room and placed a tray on a small table. "I brought tea and those lemon cookies you like so well."

"Thank you, dear." Coran turned away from the window and attempted a smile, but it was if his young ward could read his thoughts. Moving to his side, she slipped her hand into his, leaned in close and rested her head against his arm.

"I miss them too," she referred to her parents, in whose library they now stood.

Giving her hand a slight squeeze, he rested his cheek on the top of her head.

"We all do, sweet child."

They stood together, lost in their thoughts, in their shared grief.

In the background, the music's tempo shifted and a joyful melody began to play. The uplifting sounds seemed to break the spell of sadness.

"The tea will grow cold, Coran," Allura moved to pour their tea, the steaming brew giving off a delicious aroma.

The Arussian advisor watched his surrogate daughter place a plate of cookies between their now full cups before she settled into a chair. He settled into the chair across from hers, and began to add a bit of cream to his tea.

"Would you like some?" He offered. When no response came, he glanced up to find Allura seemingly lost in a trance staring off into the distance.

"Princess?"

"I'm sorry," she returned her attention to her companion. "I was thinking...I know this song."

Coran nodded. "Yes, your father sang it to you when you were just a tiny child."

"I remember," she graced him with a gentle smile. "That's why it's my favorite song."
