Dispair.
That was all there was. An endless, looming black hole that rent Axel's soul in two.
Roxas was gone.
That was all that mattered.
"No one would miss me."
Coming out of my cage
He remembered the first time he left his room. A week after Roxas had left. He stood, blinking, in the hall outside of his room. After a week of nothing but darkness in his room, even the feeble light of the castle hallway hurt his eyes. There was nothing he wanted to do more than turn around and bolt back into the safety of his room. But he wouldn't. For Roxas. Whether or not he returned Axel's feelings, he had to keep going, living in the desperate hope of just seeing him again.
And I've been doing just fine
He was alright. No, he wasn't, but he functioned like a normal person now, at least. A normal nobody. The thought was almost laughable. Almost.
Gotta, gotta, be down, because I want it all
Axel wanted him back.
He jumped at the chance to infiltrate where Roxas was being held and get him back.
Xemnas warned him about what he might find. Axel shrugged it off.
That couldn't happen to Roxas.
Could it?
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
Axel stared sadly at his feet. It was only a kiss.
It was only a kiss
He saw them. The way they looked at each other. Roxas looked at her in the way he had once looked at Axel. For the first time, he was envious of the girl who had led such a lonely life. Not real enough to be somebody. Not fake enough to be a nobody.
Namine.
Now I'm falling asleep
Exhausted, Axel collapsed onto his bed. The kid still had some spunk in him. He smiled to himself, only to have it slide off of his face at the memory of Roxas and Namine looking at each other. However, even that unpleasant memory couldn't keep exhaustion at bay. He slid into an uneasy dream of Roxas and Namine.
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, let me go
Axel thrashed around in his sleep.
I just can't look, it's killing me.
And taking control.
Still dreaming, he turned away from the sight of the pair, feeling something inside dying. It hurt.
He sank slowly to the ground, watching in fascinated horror as wisps of dark…something floated away from his body, dissolving into the air.
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
The dream started to break up, Axel was vaguely aware of his room, in addition to the dream…
But not before something floated out of his almost completely-dissolved dream body. At first he had no idea what it was, and then it came to him…
It was a heart.
A completely clear, crystalline heart, like none he had ever seen.
A Nobody's heart.
It was spiderwebbed with cracks all over, and as the last of his awareness faded away, so did the false, broken heart.
Open up my eager eyes
Axel slowly opened his eyes to the dim light of his room…
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside.
