New one shot. yes I've been drinking again...
Catherine Willows sat alone, a half full glass of wine cradled between her slender fingertips. She squeezed her eyes closed, trying to block out the words and images of the past twelve hours, but to no avail.
The sound of the bullets, his shouts, all span round her mind like a whirlwind, threatening to sweep her up and carry her away on the currents of their chaos and heartbreak.
Nick had been the only one capable of approaching her; he'd been the one to wrench her from his cold, lifeless body, enabling David to continue his work. As far as she was concerned, nothing existed past this point; he was gone, she had nothing left.
She vaguely recalled the rumble of thunder in the distance as Nick had dragged her away, her legs incapable and unwilling to leave his side. She barely registered the fat droplets of rain that bombarded her body, bouncing like shotgun pellets off of her cold numb flesh.
The paramedics confirmed what in her heart she already knew; he was gone, there was nothing to be done. As they drew the pale white sheet over his unmoving corpse, she felt the last remnants of her shell of a heart disintegrate and whither, collapsing onto the cloth that shielded his body from the cruel elements.
She'd returned to the house, the home that they'd shared, dismissing Nick at the door with a perfunctory "I'm fine."
Once alone, she'd retreated to the solitude of her shower, praying that the scalding heat of the water would penetrate the encompassing cold and numbness that consumed her entire being.
Now as she sat, the silence of the house engulfing her, swallowing what was left of her soul, the tears she'd bottled and buried slowly began to flow free, streaming down her cheeks and dripping into her lap and glass, tainting the wine to match her emotions.
No matter how much she prayed, begged, bartered with God for a better outcome, nothing would change the fact that he was gone forever.
She felt as if her heart had been wrenched in two, the pieces scattered across the world without a hope of discovery.
She would never be complete again.
