A/N: Okay so this is one of the more raw stories I have been working on. Tell me if you like where its going. So without further ado, Here is Break Even.
Break Even
Maiko was sitting out by the lake, a pile of rocks beside her, grabbing one and tossing it into the turbulent waves, tears slipping down her cheeks. The words her best friend said to her resonating in her head, taunting her, breaking her, crushing her, killing her.
'Maiko, you're just a friend. You'll never be more than that to me. Nothing you could do would be able to make me happy. You'd be nothing but a constant disappointment and I refuse to deal with that. Go play romantic somewhere else, your bothering me.'
The memories of all the times spent in his arms, all the signs that he sent to make her think he actually cared, they were a lie? Her world was crashing down around her and she could do nothing but stare out into stormy water and throw stones to pass the time. Her heart broken by the cruel words, unable to do anything but love him despite the pain, she left the city and went back to the beginning. She ran away, leaving him to his world of one night stands and nine-to-fives, wanting nothing more than to heal. Her voice coming out in a broken melody, "What am I supposed to do when the best part of me was always you, what am I supposed to say when I'm choked up and your okay…"
'Maiko, you'll never be the woman I need. You don't have the right look or even the right family. You aren't good enough Maiko, and you'll never get better. I mean, look at yourself then look at me. I'm rich, was born that way and will always be that way. You are the daughter of a carpenter and lead a humble life. You will never be good enough.'
Grabbing a larger rock and throwing it as hard as she can, hearing the splash and looking over at her phone, spotting the name on the caller ID, Sasuke Uchiha, she answered the phone calmly.
"Yes?" Maiko whispered, hearing the voice that has been echoing in her head for the past week and a half.
"Maiko, where the hell are you? You sound like you're halfway across the country." Sasuke's deep baritone rumbled in her ear, but it wasn't the tone that shocked her, it was the concern in that voice that threw her off. Then again it could be frustration that his ever obedient secretary/friend has once again accomplished the status of irritating pest.
"Where I am doesn't matter to you. I think you've made things quite clear, if not painfully obvious. I sent you my resignation, what more could you want from a foolish child like me? Oh and have a nice life. I refuse to put a damper on your life by trying to love you. Goodbye Sasuke." Maiko replied calmly, before hanging up the phone. She flung the offending object into the lake, standing and brushing off her pants with one goal in mind, fall in love or die trying.
