This story is for one of my best friends, Sara, who always wants me to write a story with Rei-chan as the main character instead of Usagi or Minako. Sara, here's your wish.

Rei sat on the porch of her shrine, the Hikawa Jinja Shrine on Sendai Hill. She watched the soft pink cherry blossoms flutter to the ground and sighed. 'Just once, I wish I could be free, to fly with the wind. I wish I could have my dreams…and be accompanied by friends. Just once, I want to be alive again.' She thought. A breeze picked up and her raven hair swirled around her shoulders. She looked at the delicate blossoms one last time and went inside.

"Rei!" her grandfather called. "Rei Hino, where ARE you?"

"Here, Grandpa." Rei called back. She just wanted to rest.

A little old man jogged through the halls and stopped at Rei. "There's a festival at the Shrine in a month." He stated, and ran back off.

Rei sighed unhappily and went to her room. It was huge—there was a little table for tea, a large bureau, and her huge scarlet and oak 4-canopy bed. The floors were dark wood, the walls were deep scarlet. Instead of bright lights, there were soft, flickering red candles scented lightly of cinnamon and rose. 'I want to be myself, live my own life. I'm only 16…why do I work so hard?'

Just then, there was a knock on her door. It was one of the priestesses. "Miss Rei, we need your help."

"With what?" Rei said tiredly. She just wanted to rest! Why did she need to help?!

"The fire is showing signs, Rei, and we can't decipher them."

Rei's tiredness went away. She had lived at the temple as long as she could remember. A fire reading was actually relatively relaxing. And maybe this was the answer to her wish. She got up and followed the priestess into a room off the main shrine.

"—and it's been blazing up since 15 minutes ago!" a priestess whispered to another priest.

The priest's eyes got wide. "They're calling REI! This must be serious…are the gods angry?" he whispered, perhaps a bit TOO loudly. Rei shivered involuntarily.

"Rei-sama, we're sorry to bother you." One of the main priests smiled. Rei returned his smile shakily.

"Can I be alone to read the fire, or must you monitor me? I will not touch it, everyone here knows that." Rei snapped. She shrank back with the priest's angry, shocked look and muttered apologies.

"Quite all right, Rei-sama." The priest said, now hurt by the girl's sharp words. He cleared out all the people from the fire and Rei sat down.

"I wish…" She whispered at the flickering, then blazing, then flickering fire.

"We know, Rei. We heard." A deep voice whispered from the fire.

"Ugh. I'm really tired…now I'm imagining things." Rei got up and walked to the door.

"It's locked, Rei." The voice said again. "Sit and listen, and we will stop haunting the fire. If you don't…Hikawa may have a little accident."

Rei sat down in front of the fire as it swirled around her gracefully. "You have been gifted from the gods." The voice told her. "You are what humans call, 'psychic.'"
