This is something I wrote a while back and felt like it was some of my better writing (I could be wrong lol) but anyway here ya go.
-Many Years Later-
An old man lays in his bed, his wife perched in the chair beside him waiting for the inevitable. Silent tears prick at the corners of her eyes as she watches the man she loves slowly wither away to nothing. The couples kids are gathered in the living room downstairs, waiting to hear the cries of their heartbroken mother drift down from the room. Its agony for them all.
Pain courses through every vein, every nerve, every cell in the old mans body. The strength and fight that used to live in his blue eyes has vacated, leaving them as empty pools of lukewarm water for his wife to swim in. The man knows his time is coming, he has for a while now.
His breath is getting shakier and his lungs fill with fire instead of air. The old man lets out a pained wheeze, causing the wife's head to snatch up. She shuffles her way over to the side of the man, looking at his familiar body. The arms that would hold her when the nightmares came have become nothing but bone and skin. The warm chest that she used to use as a pillow is now lit with flames on the inside. Only a few wisps of gray are left of the beautiful blond crown that used to adorn his head.
The old man reaches out a wrinkled bony hand and caresses his wife's face, she holds onto her husbands hand knowing it will more than likely be the last time she touches him while he is alive. Slowly and ever so painfully the old man drags himself into a sitting position. He beckons the old woman closer to him. She leans in, expecting words of goodbye, but is surprised when the man presses his cracked and chapped lips to hers. They press their foreheads together and she knows what he is saying. He is not saying goodbye, only giving her something to remember him by until they meet again.
Their warm breath mingles in the air between them and they stare into each others eyes until only the old woman's breath floats from her throat and meets with the air. Her beloved husband has left her here alone to ward off the nightmares by herself. Tears begin to fall again as she lays the man down properly on the bed. She kneels beside him and takes his lifeless hand into hers and presses it to her lips and mutters these last words to her husband. "I wont forget you, I will love you until I am nothing." she stands and walks to the door, slowly turns the knob and steps out only to turn back around and look one last time. "See you soon Peeta." Katniss whispers as she closes the door to the room that holds her husbands body.
