Jealousy

It really wasn't fair.

Dave grits his teeth as he hears John's obnoxious laughter coming from the other room. His brother's room. He regrets the day he ever brought John home so his cool older brother could meet his dorky best friend. The two had gotten along well enough, much to Dave's inner relief. In fact, they had gotten on rather fabulously and John had dropped calling Dave's brother 'Mister Strider' and ended up being first name basis with him.

John started coming over more and sometimes when John would go to get something from the kitchen (he was over enough that he didn't really feel like he needed Dave with him anymore) he would linger there to talk more with Bro.

Eventually Dave found out one day that his bro and John had begun hanging out with each other when Dave was busy. Dave was surprised and confused but just kinda shrugged it off, happy that his best friend and brother were so friendly.

Then they started hanging out even when he wasn't busy. He would call or text John, wanting to hang out with his friend, only for him to text Dave back hours later apologizing and saying that he had been out and had his phone on vibrate and hadn't seen the message till then.

One time like that and Dave could understand. After all, this is John after all, but as time went on Dave had hardly hung out with the other at all except for school. John, the idiot, didn't seem to understand when Dave was hinting that they should spend more time together and whothehellareyouhangingoutwi ththatyouseemtopreferoveryou rbestfriend?

Then Dave found out.

Learning that your older brother, who is ages older then you, is going out with your best friend, who is a freaking year younger then you, are dating was a very world shaking thing.

John about freaking begged Dave to keep it quiet. Between the considerable age gap and the fact they were both guys, they really didn't want to say anything until John was eighteen or maybe even later. Dave was silent for a bit, as he processed this startling truth. Both John and his Bro stood waiting. Finally, in a rather lapse of judgment, Dave answered.

"Sure."

John gave a large sigh of relief and hugged Dave happily and from over his shoulder Dave could see the tension in Bro's shoulders ease away a bit and give a small smirk. John then began telling him about their relationship and forcing Dave to come watch a movie with them and for just a little while Dave lets himself begin to hope that this means that things will get better.

They don't.

If anything, it gets worse. They don't have to hide it around Dave anymore so they don't. They cuddle, they kiss, they do gross cliché couply things. Dave thought that maybe after that night of watching a movie together he'd be able to hang out, even if it means the three of them, but there's no luck on his side.

So now he's alone in his room with his legs pulled up to his chest and he's not crying, he's not, and he hates himself. He hates his best friend. And he hates his brother for taking his best friend away from him.

He just feels so alone.
