Nathan exited the operating room, still wiping his hands clean. Hesitantly he raised his big, brown eyes to the gathered people. His friends immediately saw their answer in his sorrowful gaze.
Josiah clasped his shoulder. "It was her time."
"Ya can't save everybody," Chris commented, nodding toward the exit.
All but Josiah slowly filed out. Vin paused in the doorway and looked back to Nathan. "For what it's worth, pard, you've saved every one o' us."
But those accomplishments paled in the light of their friend's death. Left alone with Josiah, Nathan leaned his head against his best friend's shoulder and cried.
