The Fish and the Frog
Lilithia looked down onto the pond with curiosity unmatched by any other drow of the surface. She had never seen water, so clean, so clear, so… smooth. The creatures darting about under the surface had silver covering them, they had no teeth or pincers she could see. Drizzt came up beside her, kneeling to fill his water skin with the water from the cool, creek-fed pond.
"Why is it so beautiful?" she asked, to his dismay, in drow. He had been trying to teach her the common tongue for a long time now. "It is clean too."
"Yes. Surface water is clean, and not brackish. Those are fish. Fih-shh." He said, pointing to the little streaks of silver. Lilithia crinkled up her nose and crouched beside him, dipping her fingertips into the water as she tried to follow his mouthing of the word.
"Feeshuh." She whispered, looking to him. Drizzt chuckled and shook his head.
"Fih-shh."
"Feesh."
"Yes, that would be about right." He said, patting her shoulder, and then pointing to a mossy rock across the way, to a rather large frog sitting on it.
"Frah-g." Drizzt said, making croaking noises and smiling as she giggled. He had never heard any female drow giggle, and not so sincerely.
"Frawg." She said, making the noises of the giant cave frogs she had seen. The frog across the pond jumped out over the water, nearly reaching Drizzt and Lilithia before splashing into the water and swimming off. Lilithia screeched and jumped, falling backwards and spooking the two mares they had gbeen given twenty miles behind them in Longsaddle. Drizzt chuckled and leaned over her, looking into her furious lavender eyes.
"I think he likes you." He suggested, winking and offering her a hand. Lilithia tugged herself up and brushed off her weakening armor, the designs fading on her piwafwi. Drizzt grabbed her arm and spun her around to brush her shoulders off. Together, they started towards the horses, and mounted to ride farther west, past Riverdale.
