Chapter 1
To say Lucas was bored would be an understatement, a large one. He stared out the window of his classroom, not even listening to his teacher ramble on about rocket parts, how to work them, etcetera. Honestly, he'd heard it all before and it was rather tedious and complicated. He had no real desire to learn any of this stuff, and he had no desire to learn to master his magic. He could just go with the flow; he had enough natural talent.
SMACK! When Lucas's ears stopped ringing, he turned around and glared at his sister. "Pay attention, idiot," she snapped. The teacher said something, and Avery snapped her head around, scribbling a note on her notebook. Lucas rolled his eyes at her and went back to his thoughts.
Why had his mother been so insistant upon their learning here, at Will-O-Wisp? Why was his mother keeping SO MANY secrets? Just the other night, he'd caught her talking to a raven. A RAVEN! Was his mother finally losing it? When asked about anything to do with her, or the past, she got nervous and changed the subject, even when the topic of Father came up. No, ESPECIALLY when the two brought up their father. Mother would get a far away look in her eyes and seem very...depressed. One thing was for sure, Lucas was SICK of the secrets!
All through his life, at least, what he could remember, his mother had been tip-toeing around him and his sister, and giving Lucas himself looks. Looks that were so guarded, it was hard to tell if it was pride, suspicion, or fear. But...that didn't make any sense...
Lucas shook himself as the bell rang, signaling the end of the day. He got up and left, ready for the holidays. He would finally get to see his mother, maybe even meet his father or grandparents! This thought excited him. Rushing to his dorm, he gathered his already packed stuff and waited impatiently for his sister. Minutes later, Avery came running into sight and together, the two found their ride, which then took them home.

When they burst into their home in Assam, on Gren, they were greeted by a strange sight. A bunny woman sat in a chair across from their mother, idly sipping tea and chatting with the mother. "Oh! Nadia, you didn't tell me you're children were coming," the pretty woman said, sounding slightly scolding. Their mother blinked confused violet eyes. "Oh...right. The holidays...I'm terribly sorry, Lassi, sometimes even the simplest things slip my mind nowadays." The bunny woman, Lassi, shook her head. "Hoenstly, Nadia! That doesn't sound like you at all; that sounds like me!"
Nadia looked to her children. "I suppose it's a good thing they're here. They needed to know sooner rather than later. Which part would you like to explain to them, Lassi?" "Mother! What's going on?" Avery demanded. "Lucas, Avery, first off, I would like you to know, Chai and I love you," Nadia began quietly. "Mother?" Avery asked fearfully. "Who's Chai?" Lucas asked, suspicious. "I am," someone with a deep voice said. A salamander man walked in, and walked over to Nadia, placing his arm around her.
"The thing is, Lucas and Avery, Chai and Nadia aren't your real mother and father," Lassi stated. Nadia nodded solemly. "You were adopted! Right! More tea, please, Nadia?" Lassi said cheerfully, as if this were simple news. Lucas and Avery stared at the ones they'd always assumed to be their real parents in shock, unable to speak. Nadia looked away, but Chai met their gazes. And for a moment, time froze.
