Phantom of the ShadowsPrologue
"It's over now the music of the night!"
The cry of her Angel cut through her soul like the blade of a knife. She shuddered against Raoul, who mistook her shudder of sadness for one of fear.
"Don't
worry Christine it's over," he told her, while rowing the gondola
through the tunnels of the underground lake. "He is gone…You're
finally free, just like you wanted to be."
However, now,
Christine wasn't sure if she wanted to be free. Part of her still
seemed drawn to the man she had just betrayed and left behind. He
had helped her through many trials throughout her life and never
abandoned her. He had not only been her mentor; he had also been her
friend.
They reached the shore and Raoul helped Christine out of the gondola. He took her hand and started off at a run, navigating their way through the burning Opera House, dodging both flames and falling, charred timbers. After a few minutes, Raoul felt a small tug on his hand. He turned and faced Christine, who had suddenly become still.
"Raoul,
we must go back."
Raoul could not believe his ears. She wanted
to go back to that monster? Why? "Go… back?" he managed to
utter. Doubt, disbelief and fear started to creep into him. Was he
losing his Christine's affection? A small shudder ran up his spine
as the memory of being tied to a portcullis and slowly strangled
flooded into his mind. That creature was a murderous monster. Why
would Christine want to go back to him?
"Raoul he will be killed, if not by the mob, then by the fire itself. Please Raoul, he did so much for me, I can not just abandon him to death."
"Christine, he has tried to kill so many people. Not only that, but if we go back, we might get killed ourselves. Come Christine, we must hurry!"
Christine finally gave way to Raoul's persistent pulling and they continued their flight to get out of the burning Opera House. They were so close to the exit of the building, that Christine did not see the burning support beam that was about to fall on her. With a cry, Raoul lunged for Christine, pushing her out of the burning building. Not expecting the push, Christine lost her balanced after crossing the threshold, stumbled and fell to the ground outside, hitting her head on the cobble stoned street. On impact, Christine lost all consciousness, and was engulfed in a sea of black.
When he pushed Christine to safety, Raoul put himself in the falling beam's path. Before he could see Christine stumble and fall, the beam half-crushed, half impaled him. His final thoughts before his death were concerning the safety of his beloved Christine.
