A Day In The Life of a Phantom

The whole wardrobe of my similar looking costumes stares at me as I place the first costume I need on my body. I warm up my voice a little playing a quick scale on the piano . I glance at the book on my chair as it calls to me. Checking the time on the clock I realize I have two hours before show time. I only get a few moments in the old Paris world before the people I need barge through my door.

They set me in a chair and get started on my face. A piece of plaster is set around me uncomfortably and I am told that they will be back in twenty minutes. Twenty minutes later they remove the plaster and use their makeup to work on me once again.

A cap is place on my head with sparse hair and then another wig is placed on my head. The hair is smooth and raven black. They pat me on the shoulder and tell me that I'm ready. Ten minutes before show time. Not that I'm on on exactly ten minutes. More like twenty.

A small, girl, who is thirty but has the appearance of a seventeen year old, especially with all that makeup, hugs me excitedly. It's her first show on this stage and mine too, she having performed in Las Vegas before. We walk backstage together and meet my other friend. We are all extremely nervous, knowing that we will be recorded and perform in front a huge audience. The girl steps out first, since her part comes before both of ours. The man then steps out next to get ready for his part. The familiar lyrics of the song sooth me. I don my white mask and step behind the mirror. I can do this .
