Open Your Eyes

Chapter 1: The Idea

"Edward, Bella, please come in here for a moment." called Carlisle from somewhere upstairs, just loud enough for me to hear. He sounded just the same to me, calm, but with a layer of authority, but Edward – with his ultra sensitive vampire hearing – must have heard an undertone of something, because he scooped me into his arms and nearly flew to his room on the third floor of their magnificent house.

It took all of two seconds to get there, and when we entered the room, Carlisle was standing in Edward's room. As I met his youthful, golden eyes, I blushed, because Edward had carried me into the room bridal-style. Well, I did blush until I saw the somewhat worried look on Carlisle's features. His forehead was crinkled and his brows mashed together, although, as I met his eyes once again, they seemed almost excited, so I was left in a state of confusion as Edward set me on my feet.

If not for the look on Carlisle's face, I would have smiled as I entered my boyfriend's room. Just the same as always. It was spacious, with an inviting black leather sofa on one wall, and covering the entire opposite were rows and rows of music centred around a massive sound system that I was as hesitant to touch as the first time he brought me here. Sometimes if I slept over, on the pretence of a slumber party with Alice, there would be an insanely large bed in the centre of the room that matched the colour scheme of the room; various shades of gold. The southern section of wall, however, was constructed out of glass. The entire house had this feature, and the windows gave the most exquisite view of the Olympic Ranges. As I took all of this in for what feels like the thousandth time in my life, I noticed that neither Carlisle or Edward were speaking. Just staring at each other.

I pouted. I hated it when they had silent conversations. Even though Edward couldn't read my thoughts; I agreed with his siblings that the mind reading can get extremely annoying. I wasn't actually that annoyed; I was just using my annoyed face as a mask.

Why are they both so tense?

Why do they think it's necessary to have a silent conversation?

Are they afraid of scaring me?

As I was about to voice my concerns, Edward started to speak. "Impossible," he breathed so softly that I could barely hear it. "How did you discover this?" He whispered no louder than before.

"It was quite simple Edward," Carlisle replied in a voice that barely surpassed a murmur. "I just didn't notice this... anomaly." He looked down in... shame? Defeat? I couldn't tell without seeing his eyes.

"What is it?" I asked. I've never seen Carlisle or Edward act so strangely. I turned and looked into Edward's features and saw shock on his face, but some crazed excitement in his eyes that I couldn't place in this situation. Edward looked down, picked up my hand and said, "Carlisle has discovered a way for us to sleep."
