For Her Happiness

SUMMARY

The Magus has always cared for Princess Katherine. Tom Knows of his affections and talks to the Magus, however, the Magus shows Tom his own growing affections for the Princess.

STORY

Tom stood at the door to the Magus's room, his face set with determination. The twenty year old knocked on the door and immediately the Magus answered, his long hair slightly ruffled, his face beginning to show his age.

"Good evening, Tom. What brings you to my door at this hour?" he asked.

"I'd like to talk with you." replied Tom, his voice thick with a Scottish accent.

"Come in." the Magus ushered the young man in and he lead him over to the bed, rubbing his own eyes as he sat down next to the young blonde. "Now how serious is it."

"I think it to be very serious, as it regards your feelings." The Magus' interest was peaked.

"My feelings?" He queried.

"Yes." replied Tom. "I have noticed that you hold a certain affection for the Princess Katherine."

"Well, I cannot deny that she is someone that I hold very dearly to my heart." The Magus admitted.

"More dearly then you think that you let on." Tom commented underhandedly. The Magus sighed and stood up. He folded his hands behind his back and walked to look out of the window.

"You care for her, too." the Magus observed. "I know you do. I see it in your eyes. You are willing to give her up to me because you want to see her happy, even if it means loosing her to someone else. But it shouldn't be like that, Tom. I am just a Magus that lost his magic. You are a fine man who can protect her and give her more happiness then any could dream to be possible."

"That's not true." Tome tried to counter, but the Magus continued on.

"You can give her so much more then I ever could." he said. "Besides, I may not live as long as either of you. You will, most likely, be there until the day she dies. I'm sure that you would be perfect for the princess. You could do much more then this fool ever could."

"Magus…"

"Go on, Tom." urged the Magus. "When the time is right, confess to Princess Katherine. Tell her how you feel and make her feel happy. Make her feel loved."

"You're willing to give up the girl that should have been yours to me?" Tom was awed.

"She was never mine to begin with." the Magus corrected him. "By my mind, she could never have been mine. Now go, Tom. I'm sure that you have a lot to think about. The final decision is up to you."

"Of coarse." replied Tom, dazedly. "Goodnight, Magus."

"Goodnight, Tom." replied Magus, showing the young man out of the door. He waited until the man had turned around the next corner before he shut the door.

He leaned against the closed door and let out a long sigh.

That had been hard. It had been hard to give the Princess up like that. But to him that was what she was. A princess. Untouchable, impossible to own, out of reach. She had always been a far off fantasy to him. Even when he'd had the chance to take her for his own he didn't do it.

Why?

Because all along it had felt as if she wasn't meant to be his. She wasn't meant to be by his side and now he knew why.

It was Tom's side that she was meant to stand by and not his own. He was meant to guard from afar, but to never get too close. It had always been like that, even before the gargoyles had hatched. He was meant to keep her happy, but Tom would always make her happiest.

Because of this, he would continue to be second best.

For her happiness, he wouldn't get to close.

The Magus wiped away the single tear that fell from his eyes and returned to his bed.

For her happiness…
