"Lame, bad, terrible, stupid, and useless." Adyson said as she was labeling the presents she got from boys. Every Valentines day, Adyson would always get a bunch of presents and gifts from nearly every guy in school. Well liked, Pretty, and Intelligent were good traits to have, but for Adyson it was more of a curse.
"And what the heck is this? Toothpaste?" she complained as she threw the last gift into her locker. She only liked one guy in the entire school anyway, so these failed attempts to woo Adyson were somewhat humorous in her eyes. She grabbed her Science 9 book, and proceeded to her 5th hour class.
When she entered the class room, nearly every boy looked lovingly at her. Adyson ignored everyone, and took a seat next to the only boy in this class period that she could actually stand.
"What's up, Jeet?" Adyson asked the Indian boy nicely. Baljeet was the only guy in the school who did not try to hit on her besides Phineas, and he was Adyson's only guy friend that was not a total jerk/flirt. Baljeet finished his homework in seconds, and then turned toward his friend.
"Hey Adyson, not much is going on…"he replied in a sad tone. Adyson could tell he was depressed by the way he was acting; he was usually very vibrant and outgoing. Today he was quiet and secluded.
""What's wrong?" she asked him as sweetly as she could, hoping to get a response from her friend.
"Well, Ginger and I kinda broke up." He said quickly.
Adyson was shocked by this. In her mind, Ginger and Baljeet were perfect for each other. Apparently she was wrong.
"Why?" she asked.
"Well, she did not like me hanging out with you, and she gave me an ultimatum; either stop being your friend or break up."
"Ginger was jealous of me?" Adyson thought to herself.
"So how did your Valentines day go?" Baljeet asked Adyson thoughtfully. Adyson just rolled her eyes and began to rant about the lame gifts she got. Before anyone knew it, class was over, and Baljeet accompanied his friend to her locker.
"I had a gift for you. Hold on a minute." Baljeet said as he ran to his locker. He returned about a minute later with a small box.
"Are you asking me to be your Valentine?" Adyson asked Baljeet, not seeing him as the flirty, cruddy gift giving type.
Baljeet shook his head to signal no, "I just wanted to give you it as a really good friend". He dropped the box into her hands. Adyson opened the box and could not believe what she saw.
Inside of the box was a silver necklace. Not just any silver necklace, but her grandmother's necklace that she was forced to sell at the local pawn shop to pay for Adyson's hospital bills when she was born. Adyson had never seen it before, except in pictures, but knew it was the one due to a heart-shaped mark of the locket.
"How…How did you get this?" Adyson forced out after a minute of absolute silence. Baljeet simply smiled.
"About half of my collage fund, but it was worth it." He suddenly noticed the time on the clock down the hall, "Shoot, I'll be late for class. See you on the bus!" and he quickly ran to his sixth hour class.
Adyson did not move a muscle, instead just admiring the priceless family heirloom that she had just received. After about forty minutes, she smiled, and put the locket around her neck, always remembering the kindness of her friend.
