Disclaimer: I don't own C.S. Lewis's amazing work.
The Pevensies are hard at work, with some fluff of Peter and Leah discussing their future. Takes place during The Horse and His Boy. Might become a twoshot.
"I don't know what to do," muttered High King Peter, resting his head in his hands.
"Long day at work?" asked Leah, his fiancée. They were going to be married in only five days and the stress was taking its toll on both of them.
"My work never stops," Peter replied. In the back of his mind echoed a thought, but he didn't know what it meant or where it had come from: I'll certainly have more respect for my King when we return—if we return. Where was this place he thought he would go back to? He remembered a place—a train station in the country, a mysterious wardrobe, a seemingly eccentric professor, and . . . a grouchy housekeeper—but they seemed like something far in the past, or maybe even a dream.
"I know what you mean." King Edmund, Peter's younger brother, entered the study. "How many times do I need to tell those giants that even if they don't pay the tribute now, they still have to pay it later?"
"Ugh," moaned Lucy and Susan simultaneously. Edmund looked over, he hadn't even heard them enter.
"Leah," asked Lucy, "How's the wedding planning going? Aren't you almost done?"
Leah nodded. "My final dress fitting is tomorrow, and the dwarfs have graciously offered to fashion rings for us. Peter, they'll come to you for the fitting of your ring, and mine has already been fitted."
Peter smiled up at her, as she was standing behind his chair. "I can't wait."
"Your Majesties, if I may interrupt," came a voice from the doorway. All five heads looked up. It was Tumnus.
"Yes, Mr. Tumnus?" asked Peter.
"Your dinner is ready, your Majesties. And don't forget that the young prince from Archenland arrives next week."
"More work," muttered Edmund under his breath. "Great."
Leah touched Peter's shoulder, and he knew what she was thinking. "You three go on ahead. We'll follow."
Lucy grinned impishly. "As you wish, Peter," she replied. "Tumnus, do you mind staying to make sure High King Peter here doesn't do any more work?"
Tumnus smiled at her humor. "Of course, Your Majesty."
Peter waited until his brother and sisters had exited before turning to his soon-to-be wife. "What is it you wanted to talk about?" he asked.
Leah smiled. "Nothing. I just wanted us to be alone for awhile."
"If you two promise not to do any work until after dinner, I will leave you alone," Tumnus suggested.
"That would be wonderful," Leah replied.
"I promise," said Peter. Tumnus grinned at the couple and left. "Now, since we're truly alone," Peter said, getting up to shut the door to the study, "What is it?"
Leah was sitting in an armchair near the fireplace, lost in her own thoughts about her and Peter's future.
"Leah?" Peter stopped next to her armchair. "Hello?"
"Oh," said Leah, snapping out of her daydream. "What?"
"What were you thinking about?" asked Peter.
Leah smiled. "Our future together."
"Some future," Peter replied sarcastically. "Being a King, especially the High King, is tiring."
"That's why you take some time off," Leah responded. "Everyone needs time off."
"Kings don't get time off," Peter said wearily. "You can try, and believe me, I've tried. But people—and animals—still come to you when they're in a dilemma."
"That's what a Regent is for," Leah said.
"Tomorrow," Peter promised, "Susan, Lucy, Edmund, and I will meet and decide on a Regent to take over so we can take some time off."
Leah smiled. "Perfect."
Tell me what you thought! Turns out there wasn't room for as much fluff as I wanted (the conversation kinda went in a direction I wasn't expecting, lol), but I think it was good. Not my best, though.
