Chapter 1 - Dreams of Darkness

I lost myself, we all fall down
I don't belong here. I don't belong anywhere.
Darkness was my birth, and it will be my death.
Ardea focused on her balance beam, stretching her legs as far as she could go. Her legs were almost in a straight line, forming a split position.
An existence that's not supposed to exist.
"Ardea, will you please pay attention?" Lotus yelled at her. Ardea snapped herself from her thoughts, and focused onto her teacher.
Lotus was eighteen, only two years older than her. She had long white hair that had been pulled into a loose bun with bangs framing her face and pale blue eyes. She wore a simple black leotard and tights to match.
"Sorry, Lotus," Ardea apologized.
She was nothing like her teacher. Sure, she had long black hair and eyes the colors of rubies, but that's what was her default. She looked like the exact opposite of Lotus; a darker, scarier nature of her. The only differences between them was their personalities. Ardea was scared and shy, Lotus wasn't afraid to get up in anyone's face.
"Alright class, keep practicing the routine and we'll check back next week," Lotus said, clapping her hands. Ardea waited patiently for her teacher, grabbing a small duffel bag.
Darkness surrouding me, suffocating me, yet giving me life.
"Spacing off today, are we?" Lotus asked, giving a slight chuckle.
Ardea jumped at her question, startling her. She looked away, feeling ashamed and embarrassed. "Hey look, if you're having an off day, you need to let me know," Lotus told her. She undid her hair, and shook it out. "So, what's the problem?"
She looked up at her teacher. "Do you really have to go?"
Lotus sighed. "I'm sorry that it was so sudden. It must have been bothering you lately." Wrapping an arm around Ardea's shoulders, she pulled her into a hug. "You're a big girl now, Ardea. I'm pretty sure you can handle living on your own for a month or two."
"But Lotus-" Ardea tried to speak.
"No buts," Lotus interuppted. "I know it's been hard having to try and take care of yourself, but don't worry, I'll have people watching out for you."
Ardea never knew the kind of work that Lotus did, and when she asked, Lotus told her it was too dangerous to talk about. "Okay."
Feeling a small weight off her shoulders, Ardea stretched her arms to the sky. 'I'll be okay,' she thought. 'I can do this. I can handle living on my own for a few months.'
A feeling of emptiness. Darkness surrounding her body, neither warm nor cold.
Ardea jerked out of her sleep, hearing voices. Looking over at her clock, she found out it was now turning 12:30. It was awfully late for Lotus to be having someone over.
Pushing her covers away from her, the young girl tried to rub the sleep out of her eyes. She walked to the door and out into the hallway, her bare feet silently padding across the hardwood floors. The light in the living room was on, and as she got closer, the voices got louder. She was about to turn the corner into the living room when she heard Lotus.
"Go back to bed, Ardea." Ardea stopped in her tracks, and watched as Lotus turned her head around the corner. "Did we wake you?"
Ardea nodded her head. "Well, we will try and be quieter then. But you need to go back to sleep. Remember, you have school in the morning?"
"Okay. G'night, Lotus."
"Goodnight Ardi."
Ardea walked back to her room, back into the darkness she felt as though she knew too well.
Well? What do you think? Please review and let me know.
