Let Go

The room is empty. For a moment Sam just stares, uncomprehending. And then the world spins and Sam falls against the doorframe, catching hold of it.

"No."

His hands are shaking and he's broken out in a cold sweat. He stumbles forward, drops one hand to the bed, just making sure his eyes aren't tricking him. This isn't possible. Dean was dead. Dean is dead. And now there's an empty bed and a note. A note that says Sammy let me go.

"No," he repeats.

He smells sulphur. He thinks he's going to throw up.

Sam thinks of missing time. He thinks of Kevin's burned out eyes and Dean saying "that's on my hands." He thinks of being lied to, of being betrayed. He thinks of Dean covered in blood, slurring "I'm proud of us." And he drinks until the thoughts fade out along with the silent bunker. He wakes hours later with a pounding headache, his whole body aching. And the room is still empty.

"I've got work to do," he says, and remembers standing over the trunk of the Impala, Dean at his side.

Hell won't get Sam's brother.
