CHAPTER ONE

Date Night Disaster

BELLA

"Slow down."

That gorgeous bell-like voice chuckles beside me.

"What do you mean? Are you the biggest hypocrite or what?" I narrow my eyes at my husband beside me.

"Bella. Even for us, this is just too fast," his golden eyes narrow at me until I ease my foot from the accelerator.

"Maybe I want to get home so I get can into that blue little number I purchased yesterday," I shrug with a smirk.

It was our wedding anniversary. I wanted to celebrate in the only way we knew how to celebrate best. His fists tense on his knees proving he's just as excited about the party.

"Doesn't mean we need to drag roadkill along with us," he takes my hand.

I was shocked that he even let me drive to begin with. This Volvo was his life, yet here I was enjoying the hum of the engine beneath me as we made our way back to Forks. We were three hours away from the city following our date night.

It was just after 3 am.

The world was sleeping but we were wide awake.

The beauty of vampirism meant we could travel further for date night and not need to be home by a certain hour. We could drive through the night. A babysitter also wasn't a necessity. Renesmee knew the rules. Homework then bed. No phones after lights out. A young woman with the mind of a 13-year-old meant little to me. She was still my baby.

She was mature and knew how to lead the life of a teenager, but when she wanted to play us, it was a nightmare. She would run to her fun aunts and uncles for backup, pout at grandpa Carlisle for pity, cuddle Esme for advice. Her power was showing us what she wanted, but it was also making us do what she wanted sometimes. We were all wrapped around that little finger.

Including Jacob. Jacob was the worst of it. I had restricted contact between the two of them. I wanted normalcy for Renesmee. I didn't think running around after a werewolf boyfriend was that. I allowed it but restricted. Attending a high school, making friends. That was normal for someone her age. The homework was difficult, but we helped her. Thankfully for us, her intelligence was more advanced. She was like a prodigy child. We often helped her with the difficult math or history, but for the most part her grades we good.

"Bella?"

In my thoughts, I hadn't noticed Edward talking.

"Stop," he calls out.

I do. It's sudden. The car screeches loudly to a halt in the middle of the road.

Thankfully we weren't on the motorway. We were on a backroad surrounded by trees and greenery. So when we noticed the flames coming from the car before us they stood out in the dark. They licked the metal frame of a small hatchback.

"Wait here. There might be blood," he demands, "I don't want you losing control."

"I'll call 911," I'm worried.

Could we save this driver?

Shocked I watch him race to the car at an inhuman speed. He narrowly misses the flames engulfing the back of the car to reach into the driver's side.

Unable to help it I throw myself from the car. I needed to help whoever was stuck. Instinct pumped through me to loud to ignore.

Just as I approach I watch my glorious husband pull out the form of a young woman from the wreckage. She looks no older than 18. Brunette, slightly tan but mostly pale, and well built.

"Bella, call for help," he instructs, "Quickly. She's dying."

His voice is even. Calm. It's slightly terrifying and makes the panic in the situation more intense.

The blood was strong.

The young woman had gashes on her head, blood across her shirt. I watch my husband lie her on the cold road before pulling his coat off to lie it over her injured body. I'm torn between my motherly and vampire instinct. I want to attack, but I want to save her both at the same time.

"Quick," he yells with more force.

It's enough to get me moving. I rush to the car for my phone dialling for Carlisle. 911 wouldn't help. We were too far away from town for an ambulance to get here quickly enough.

"Bella?" he sounds confused.

"Carlisle. You need to get here. There's a young girl. She was in an accident," I say, "there's so much blood."

"Where are you?" he asks calmly.

"About two hours from Forks. You need to hurry," I plead.

"You need to get her to a hospital, Bella," he says.

"There's no time," I snap shocked at how rude I sound toward my father-in-law.

"Even if I run Bella it'll take me an hour to find you," he says, "if she's only on her last breath she needs you to act quick. Is she conscious?"

"No," I answer standing back by the car.

I glance back to Edward who is trying to bound the wounds on her legs. To stop the loss of blood. Glass from the windscreen had shattered causing several cuts across her skin. Wounds were everywhere.

"Ask Edward to try his best to stop the bleeding," he explains, "I'm coming now. I'll try and be as quick as I can."

"We need to change her," I say suddenly, "she's so young. This isn't fair."

"I can't make that choice, Bella," he says, "That's on you and Edward."

He hangs up suddenly leaving me with the life or death decision.

"Change her," I call out to Edward.

"I can't do that," he says quietly.

I hear it.

"Please," I beg, "She's just a kid."

"We know nothing about her, Bella. She could have a family, friends. People waiting for her. If we change her she can never go home. If she survives or dies at least they get to have her back. Her mind is switched off. I can't read it when she is like this. I don't even know her name," he says.

"Change her or I will," the tone of my voice fierce, demanding.

If I take a single bite we both know I'd lose control. I'm not strong enough to handle blood quiet yet. He knows that the threat is empty. A total bluff. But the chance of testing me to follow through isn't worth it.

"Please," I beg, "Perhaps Carlisle and Esme will take her in. Another Cullen."

Conflicted he looks down at the young girl. I can see him considering his own daughter. What would he want if this was our child? What would I want? Would I want someone to save her or let her die? Is this really saving or just damning?

He makes the decision faster than I can blink. His teeth come crashing down sinking into her flesh. Instantly she wakes up. The screams are horrific. They're familiar. I remember the pain myself.

It's the excruciating rush of flame that moves through your bloodstream. The poison making its way organ to organ, stopping them in their tracks. Not enough heartbeat.

"Hey, it's okay. Shhh," Edward comforts her, "you're going to be okay."

I move closer trying to think of a way I can help. All of the words of sympathy are lost behind the cries for her desperation for pain relief. Now that her eyes are open I can faintly see the wide, light brown iris. She is pretty, delicate. There's no denying her beauty. Her hair is long but pulled up into a ponytail.

"Hold her hand," I demand.

I feel totally helpless. Any closer the scent of her blood would send me into a frenzy. I couldn't risk killing her. Not when she was fighting so hard.

"Agrh!" She screams into the night.

"I don't even know her name to try and calm her. To help her. Her thoughts are all over the place," he looks back to the small hatchback for a clue.

But the flames have destroyed any possible evidence of her past life.

"Her thoughts aren't straight. She's just thinking about the pain," he says, "can you try to block it out maybe?"

"No. I don't think I can do that," I shake my head.

"It's okay. Hold on, okay?" Edward whispers to the girl.

The hour stretches on. She continues to scream.

Just as it dies down Carlisle arrives with Esme in tow. They carry blankets, a bottle of water and bandages. Her eyes are closed, but she's awake.

"Maybe I was too late?" Edward mutters as Carlisle kneels down beside her.

"No, her pulse is there. It's faint," Carlisle says feeling at her neck, "she's just precious. The poor thing. Put out the car fire. I will drive her home in your car. The two of you and Esme run ahead and prepare somewhere for her to rest."

"I'll stay with you," Esme shakes her head for the first time eyes glued to the woman's small frame.

"Can you handle the blood?" Carlisle gently takes Esme's hand.

I don't know what it is they're thinking but I can tell it's along similar lines. As Edward lifts the small woman up into his arms she groans.

"She needs me. I just sense it," Esme mutters.

Her husband nods understanding the meaning behind the words.

I watch Edward lie the woman down in the back of the car before throwing a blanket over her small, broken body.

"I'll call and tell Jasper to leave," Carlisle says, "until we can sponge the blood off her Bella and Jasper should stay clear. The others too."

"I'm fine," I shake my head.

With a curt nod, both of them jump into the front of the car to drive the woman to safety. Edward and I look at each other, the horror clear on our faces. It was the furthest thing we'd expected our date night to come to.

The Cullen clan may have just gained another member.

ESME

She looks so peaceful. I look at her peaceful face and worry about the decision my son made. This woman was so young. She could have family who may be out there looking for her.

Without a single clue to who she may be this waiting game is becoming unbearable.

Was she from here?

Did she have a warm heart?

What was her name?

Would she hate us?

Carlisle had helped me wipe away the blood. Underneath a gorgeous young girl.

The long dark, brown hair, the full lips and the beautiful soft skin. Vampirism would turn her into something to behold.

She was lovely. She had been robbed of a long life. We had no clue how she had crashed yet. Edward suspected perhaps it had been a hit and run.

The fact that anyone could leave such a sweetheart to die was beyond me. She didn't deserve it.

I wanted to try and give her exactly what she deserved.

"Has she woken?" Carlisle would have spooked me if I were human.

But the gentle footsteps on the wood floor behind me gave him away.

I shake my head quietly.

"I wonder who she is?" he asks out loud.

"Whoever she was she didn't deserve this," I say sadly.

"We've helped newborns before. We can help her too," he rubs my back comforting the feeling of sorrow.

"I love you," I cover his hand with my own as he gently squeezes my shoulder.

"I love you too, my sweet," he says, "come. You need to relax. You will hear he wake from downstairs."

"I don't want her to be alone when she does," I say, "I'm happy to wait."
