"Max, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
"What's that supposed to mean?" She snapped angrily, her dark brown eyes burning into his.
"You know exactly what I mean. You told him it's because I'm your best friend."
"It's true."
"It doesn't make any sense! What kind of a reason is that? 'He's my best friend, so I hate him.'"
"I don't hate you."
"Exactly!"
"Terry, are you saying you think we should?"
"No, I'm saying you being my best friend isn't the reason I don't."
"Then what is your reason?"
"You tell me yours first."
"You're insufferable."
"But you suffer through it."
"You're arrogant."
"But you know I'm really insecure."
"You're Batman."
"And that's a bad thing?"
"You're an idiot."
"You love me anyways."
"Okay, so what's yours?"
"My what?"
"Your reason, to explain why we aren't dating."
"I don't have a reason, Max." There was a pause, an awkward silence and she avoided his eyes. He kept smiling at her until she faced him.
"I hate you, McGinnis."
"I know, I'm pretty great, aren't I?"
"Shut up." She smacked him and he laughed, but didn't say anything in return. It really was time to shut up. Still, he couldn't help thinking that she hadn't denied loving him. She tried to fight a smile and failed miserably as he pulled his mask on and left the Batcave, before he said something that would really get him in trouble.
