I didn't expect to write this. It just kind of happened O.O

Anyway, this story is based off of the episode wherein Neal lies to Peter. (Hopefully that's not a spoiler for you -.-')

Neal knows that it's just temporary. That light dancing in Peter's eyes. Because there was no way the man didn't know that he had lied straight to his face. But there was no way they were going to say it, that they knew. They were going to smile until everything went to hell again. It was how they worked. And Neal was so sick of it. And he hadn't realized until now that every time he said Peter's name he was trying to fix it somehow. And he hadn't realized until now that he just couldn't stop trying to fix it. And it was only now that he realized as his knuckles were starting to throb from banging on the Burkes' door that it was Peter's one day off and he wanted to spill his guts to him.

But he wasn't even prepared when the door swung open and he was met with the agent's eyes. He wasn't sure when he'd made plans to go there in the first place. Yet he was there and Peter looked expectant and his throat was clamping up. He didn't expect to say 'I lied' and for Peter to sigh and say 'I know.' And he felt lost, but this was right. He couldn't hurt Peter anymore and despite it all, lying to him wasn't going to help. "I was just trying to protect you…That accident scared the hell out of me and especially Elizabeth and I didn't want to get you involved in anything else because it's dangerous…I'm sorry."

"We always work best together, Neal." The corners of Peter's lips twitched upwards. "I understand why you did it, but no more lies, okay? I knew when I took the job that it would be dangerous and I knew well when I brought you into the FBI that you'd still be quite the handful. "

"Yeah. Yeah we do. I promise, no more lies." He was so tired of hiding, so tired of keeping the truth locked away. So in that moment he really meant it. After all, he truly trusted Peter. And Peter deserved to know. "Was it worth it?"

"Yeah, I'd say so."
