The elevator ride was quiet as they were leaving the 12th for the night; both lost in thought after spending much of the day interviewing friends and family members of the bombing victims.
With a ding, the doors opened and they made their way through the lobby and out to the sidewalk. They glanced at each other as they prepared to go their separate directions and suddenly they were both speaking in a rush.
"Would you like to have dinner with me sometime?"
"Will you let me take you out to dinner?"
They both paused, blinking but not breathing, as they each tried to absorb what the other had said.
"When?"
"This weekend?"
"Saturday?"
"Saturday."
"Okay."
"Yeah."
"So... it's a date then."
She smiled as she stepped closer. A new smile, something between the shy and the teasing smiles he was already familiar with.
Her voice was low and quiet as he felt her breath brush his ear.
"It's a date."
Suddenly he was watching her walk away and he nearly didn't catch the words she threw over her shoulder as she turned.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Castle."
