The Sixth Animorph- Chapter 1
I knew I shouldn't be doing it. I was supposed to be home at least twenty minutes ago. It's getting dark, and the smart thing to do- the only thing, really, is to ride my bike along the concrete path home like a regular law-abiding citizen.
But I don't. As the off-road cycling freak I was, an abandoned construction site sounded like paradise. It was just across from the mall, just a few blocks away from home. I wouldn't be too far away. How many times have I been told not to go there? Like millions. "It's dangerous," Mom told me, each time with a longer sigh of defeat. "There's deep pits filled with water, cinder block obstacles, dips, and downhill runs."
In other words, entirely awesome.
Last Saturday I found a spot and cleared away the worst debris, making a single-track loop complete with a rolling dip and a log made out of cinder blocks that I can jump. Whenever I ride it, I like to pretend that I'm racing in one of those mountain biking clubs that Mom will never let me join because they're too dangerous.
Too dangerous? Just wait, Mom.
"She rounds the corner," I began, drifting past the corner. I was using my best announcer impersonation. Reaching the downhill part, I picked up speed, and stopped petaling knowing gravity would be a better speed boost. "She's nearing the ramp!" I leaned my weight backwards as my front tire launched off of the makeshift ramp of gravel, shooting above a tiny little ravine and landing on the other side. "She makes the jump! Crowd goes wild! AAAAAAAH!" I felt stupid. But then again, nobody was around, right? It's nice to have fun every once in a while, after suffering school with no single 'hi' from any students.
There was just barely enough light to see. Maybe I should start heading home... After a few more loops, I promised myself.
Out of the corner of my eyes, I see some dark forms moving. I skid to a halt, slightly nervous. It could be a gang of homeless people or something. Then I noticed that they were just kids that go to my school. None of them I know though. I wanted to catch their attention, maybe show off a little, but I didn't think it was such a good idea. I felt left out, but pushed the feeling aside. I never was good at making friends, maybe it was because I spend my life riding my bike.
The group moves away, and I continued along the track, hoping to get some amazing lap times before dinner.
For the final time, I rounded the track, soaring over the cinder block log. Then I saw something. A light. It's moving way faster than any man made flying structure. The light was blue, even though I don't think I've seen that shade of blue. It looks almost white, but yet my brain registers it as the bluest blue I've ever seen.
That doesn't make much sense, but then again standing with my leg swung over the seat of my bike like a dog relieving itself and my mouth gaping open like a fish wasn't helping the ordeal. It was heading closer, close enough to where it had a shape. Sort of like an egg with stubby, triangular wings on the sides. Then it hit me. I know what it is now.
It's a UFO. I don't know that because I watch Fact or Faked or X-files, but because every hair on my neck was standing on end. Then I saw the group again. One tall blonde girl's hair was sticking straight from her head, realistically of course, not like Shaggy in Scooby Doo. At least I wasn't alone.
