Post-Judgment Day 1 & 2
It had been a rough week for his team and they all needed a break. Abby and McGee had gone to Abby's for a quiet night. Ducky was off in his own little world. He wasn't sure what Ziva was doing but he hoped whatever it was, she was safe. Tony was the one he was worried about. His senior field agent had become very important to him and he hated seeing him so vulnerable. He'd explained repeatedly that he didn't blame Tony or Ziva for Jenny's death. Jenny chose the way she went out and no one else.
From the noise he heard coming from upstairs, he knew DiNozzo was drinking. The door swung open and Tony stood at the time of the stairs with a half drank bottle of bourbon in his hand.
"Boss!" Tony shouted. "How the hell are ya, boss?" He asked starting down the stairs.
Gibbs slowly walked toward the stairs praying that Tony didn't break his neck when he fell. And he would fall. It was inevitable. Tony could be a klutz sometimes but he was his klutz.
"Tony?" Gibbs started. "You okay?"
"Nah," he said, as Gibbs grabbed him before he fell. "They're all gone, boss. They're all gone," Tony was slurring his words now, the alcohol obviously taking effect.
"Who's gone, Tony?" he asked getting Tony seated on the bottom step.
"All of 'em, boss. All of 'em," he moaned. "Didn't tell'em how I felt, either."
"Didn't tell Kate and she," he gasped. "He killed her, boss."
"I know, Tony," Gibbs softly answered.
"Now," he waved the bottled around, "gone." He paused, "and then, Jenny," as the tears were streaming down his face.
Gibbs gazed at his second in command not knowing how to help him. Not knowing how to ease his pain.
"I know, Tony," he replied softly, running his hand across Tony's back.
Tony felt some of the tension slipping away when Gibbs touched him. That's what he needed. He needed human contact. Just someone to hold him and let him know that it'd all be okay. He let his head fall on to Gibbs' shoulder while his hand went around Gibbs waist.
"Boss…" he started.
"Shhh, Tony," Gibbs answered. "Just let me get you upstairs."
"I have to tell you how I feel," he insisted, raising his head. Green eyes met blue.
"Not tonight, Tony," he answered. "We can talk about this tomorrow."
Tony shook his head, "No, boss. I have to say this," he argued, his hand grazing the slight stubble on Gibbs' face.
His heart was pounding, praying that Tony would remember this in the morning.
Tony ran his thumb across Gibbs' lips, "I am so in love with you."
Gibbs wasn't surprised. He wasn't shocked nor was he repulsed. He was relieved. He'd felt that way for years but was sure this young, cocky mirror image of himself could never return those feelings.
"I know, Tony," he said helping his friend to his feet. "Let's get you up to bed."
