This was written on a whim, therefore, I don't expect anyone to particularly like it.
Beyond Birthday - what a character.
Like I said, don't expect much out of this drabble. I... kind of like it; I don't know really.
Make of it what you wish.

Nursery Rhymes

From within the cage, a mocking bird sang, scarlet eyes flickering brightly as if they were the fires they represented. A small grin played upon the man's lips as he giggled maniacally, a sound that chilled his fellow prisoners to the bone, though the laughs soon turned to breathy whispers, a song soaring from behind the metal bars that closed in upon him.

No claustrophobia ever took over the man; the bird. The grin never slipped off his face. Beyond Birthday was, indeed, insane. He was fucking insane.

And the bird tweet-tweeted out:

"Twinkle, twinkle, specks of blood,
How you fill me like a flood.
Crawling up and up my arms,
Oh, I know you'll do me no harm!
Twinkle, twinkle, specks of blood.
My clock is chiming; my time is gone."

Heavy silence filtered its way throughout the prison, each and every man waiting for the next song, anticipation and anxiety seeping out of every pore in their bodies. Nothing but a slow, drawn out snicker met their ears before the tick, tick, ticks of the clock near the Warden's office was the only sound nearby.

Beyond Birthday lay slumped against a wall in his cage; his cell, no exhalations as he would have had he continued his wheezy giggle. His heart gave one last strangled beat before nothing at all; Beyond Birthday knew and felt nothing more at all. He would have to see Mr. L Lawliet in the afterlife sooner or later.

Hopefully, it would be sooner.

The ghost of his final grin was still plastered upon his face, eyes vacant and face cocked to one side, almost as though he were daydreaming. A large number of stars shone through his barred window, as if welcoming him into the misleading place that was Hell.

At that assumption, Beyond Birthday could have laughed; should have laughed.

Except he couldn't. He was dead.

Ha, ha, ha.
