Blaine wasn't really listening to what Kurt was talking about. Not because he wasn't interested, but because in his head, all he could hear was his mind screaming "don't fuck this up, don't fuck this up". Kurt's sentence trailed off, and Blaine listened to his own advice. Courage.
"...I had breakfast at Tiffany's, I sang on a Broadway stage!"
"I love you."
Kurt gulped, but that didn't faze Blaine. He had said it. He had finally said what he had been too scared to say for the past month, ever since their first kiss Blaine had knew that he loved him.
"I love you too." His heart skipped a beat, but his face played out the same emotion. Love. He felt all his bad past experiences push to the back of his mind, realising that with Kurt, with the boy he loved, everything was going to be alright. They had each other and no one could touch them.
Blaine didn't care at all about Sam and Mercedes interrupting their conversation, they were clearly very much together (even though they hadn't said anything), Blaine wondered if Kurt knew but the look in his eyes said it all over. There even seemed to be an unsaid conversation between Kurt and Mercedes along the lines of "Oh get some girl. Tell me all about it later" – "Oh I will, thanks boo".
As they walked away, Blaine turned back to his boyfriend.
"Okay so here are the nominees for the songs tomorrow..." his arms displaying show hands, something Kurt always loved about him when he got carried away in conversation. But Blaine's voice trailed off as Sam and Mercedes headed towards the counter (hand in hand, as if they didn't realise Kurt and Blaine would be keeping an eye on them).
"I meant what I said, Kurt. I really, really love you." He reached his hand across the table to put his hand over Kurt's as he held onto his coffee cup. At the contact, Kurt moved his hand away from his cup and placed it completely into Blaine's grasp.
"I know, and I meant what I said."
"You didn't have to say it back," Blaine leant forward a few inches, nearing the centre of the table, trying to make their conversation as intimate and quiet as possible. His voice lowered. "I know that we haven't been together for that long, and I know how much this kind of declaration of love means to you...I don't want to rush you into anything."
"Blaine, just-" Kurt leant forward and pressed their lips together. The kiss was completely different to their first ever kiss, which had so much passion, need and lust. This kiss was simple, short and sweet. It was a simple "I love you".
Blaine kissed him back, but let Kurt break the kiss. When they met eye contact, Blaine saw a small smile creep back onto Kurt's lips.
"Let's go, I want to see you rehearse for your audition tomorrow. Plus, we need to plan an outfit. I can't have you walking onto that stage in red skinny jeans."
"What's wrong with my skinny jeans?" Blaine looked genuinely hurt.
Kurt stood up, shushing him by taking his hand and pulling him upwards. Blaine let go of his hand and wrapped an arm around his waist, pulling him closer, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Kurt giggled and started towards the door, his boyfriend by his side.
When he thought about it, Kurt Hummel has had a pretty good year.
