"I just don't understand," Leonard said, "Why are you always so aloof?"

Beverly sighed. She always wanted to avoid the question but it was obvious Leonard would not get off her back until she answered him.

"Leonard," she said, "You know you have an elder sister and a younger brother."

"Are they better than me or something," Leonard demanded.

"Their accomplishments are more substantial but that's not why I'm aloof," Beverly said, "When you were 18 months old you had a younger sister."

"I don't remember her," Leonard said.

"Leonard one's memory isn't cemented until one is three so that doesn't surprise me," Beverly said, "As I was saying it was about the time she was perhaps 4 days old or so. At that time I was warm and loving. Ellais cried and you wanted to be helpful and you picked her up. Well you were too clumsy and you dropped her. She hit her head and subsequently died. After that I was filled with anger. I knew it was an accident. You were just a little boy and you were just trying to help. Nonetheless I couldn't help blaming you for your sister's death. I finally came to realize that the only way that I could stop myself from hating you was to treat you like a science project and not my son. I became aloof because I loved you too much to allow myself to feel anything for you emotionally. I stopped feeling anything for your father as well. It became easier to look at everything as scientific… practical. That's why I stopped caring about GOD."

"You believed in GOD," Leonard exclaimed.

"Yes," Beverly said, "Now do you have your answer?"

"Yes"

"Does it make you feel better? Can we stop this prattle?"

"No and yes"

"Good," Beverly said, "Good night Leonard."
