KAMI=SPIRIT
HAKAMAS= Old Japanese pants from back in the day
Hi, my name is Kuroko Nanami . I am 15 years old. I have long black rough hair. I have many splits ends. My skin is a powdery pale white. My eyes are like the finest green
emeralds. I wear simple clothing. I come from a poor family in the country side. I have four older brothers-Ryuua, Okita, Ikuto, Iori , three older sisters- Aina, Benio, Eka,
two younger sisters, who are twins - Hami, Hagino and one little brother- Masuto . I am one of the older siblings.
In the town I live in there is a huge forest. No one is allowed to enter the forest. For they say that demons and evil spirits haunt those lands. Many have tried to get rid of
the demons and evil spirits , but every time someone enters no one returns. Mother says the most evil demon is the fox spirit , they dress in hakamas and have long silver
hair and play a instrument. Mother says they are the most sinful creatures because they trick humans into giving their souls to them to feast on. I would never like to meet
a demon or a corrupt spirit. Mother also says that the demons and evil spirits drove away all the kami in a single shrine, but the kamis still protect us from those who have
corrupt souls . Everyone in town goes to that shrine and thanks the kami for protecting them from the demons and evil spirits.
Even though the good spirits protect us from demons and evil spirits it is not enough. Every year during the spring festival one child goes into the forest, to help maintain
the peace in our town. To help determine what gender of child they want , two days before the festival we all gather around the shrine around noon. If we get wind from the
west , the gender of the child is male, and if the wind hits us from the east , they want the child to be female. On the last day to determine what child they want, the first
crop that grows , the child from that family will be offered to the demons. It is up to the parents to decide what child will go into the forest, if they have more than one child
of that gender. It is so sad to see one of us go. Hopefully this year it won't be our family. I could not bear to see one of my brothers or sisters offered to the corrupt ones,
but it is that time of year once again.
-----------------
We all gather around the shrine. We are all patient , waiting for which side the wind will hit us. I can feel the wind, sucking up all the air like inhaling a deep breath before
letting it out. Then shooting its massive air from the east of us. I can hear the faint sounds of crying mothers. Knowing that it could be their daughter that enters the forest.
I look up to see my mother's face. She smiles at me. I can still see the hint of sadness in her lovely face. I smile back at her, trying to tell her that it would be alright.
~36 hours later~
It's the day of the festival. I am helping my sisters cook breakfast. All of a sudden I hear a terrifying scream. My whole family rushes to the back of our house. We enter
the garden to find our Mother kneeling and crying. We all knew what it all meant. Hami walks over to mother .She crouches over and hugs her tightly. I can feel tears
rolling down my face. From the corner of my eye my Father's face stiffens. This decision is going to destroy our family.
