"Rose."

One word. That's all it takes for me to turn around at look at him even though I was trying so hard to leave.

His eyes are molten silver. "Don't you think that there's more to this than what they say? Don't you feel it," he snaps. "Or has all of that supposed Gyffindor bravery fallen out the window the moment you find resistance?" I refuse to meet his eyes, instead looking to the sliver and green of his tie.

Slytherin stands for cunning. Ambition. Cleverness. But not loyalty.

"Tell me," I say loudly, my voice echoing eerily on the stone walls. "Do you want this because of how well it'll show up on your resume or how it makes you feel? Tell me, Scorpius, what do you really care about?"

He raises one pale blond eyebrow.

"Really? We're going to play that game? Obviously I care more about this than you."

"And what makes you say that?"

"When something's breaking, the people that care try to fix it!" he shouts. "They don't just-just stomp on it as if it never mattered! And they definitely don't give up." He gives a loud sigh, running a hand through his hair and leaving it completely disheveled.

"Don't give up on us, Rose," he says in a small voice, and I break.

"What-" my voice catches. "What am I supposed to do, Scorp?" My eyes sting with unbidden tears, and he takes the step up to me, looking me in the eyes with a soft expression. "They all hate you. Hugo won't even look at me. James looks like he wants to throttle you. Lily is mad that I didn't tell her, and Albus is the only one that will still talk to me. I just- I don't know what I'm supposed to do."

His hand comes up to play with a bright red curl of hair framing the side of my face.

"Well," he murmurs. "Hugo will probably let it go before the day's over, for one thing. James is just being overprotective, and it doesn't matter who I am to him. Lily will be fine if you buy her a copy of the latest 'Witch Weekly' and promise to go shopping with her sometime. I wouldn't worry about them."

Despite myself, I smile a little. The corner of his lips crooks up slightly in response.

"But, for the most part," he says, "just remember that we can do this together."
