Two Dead, One Banished After Fight Disrupts Verona's Peace
Yet another public brawl due to the Capulet/Montague feud ends violently
GH, STAFF REPORTER.
Late this afternoon, a vicious street-fight broke out on the main street of Verona between Romeo Montague, Tybalt Capulet, and Mercutio, a kinsman to Prince Escalus, ending in Mercutio and Tybalt's deaths, and Romeo's banishment.
A servant of the house of Montague, who was nearby when the fight began, explains. "Tybalt challenged Romeo, who spoke him kindly and fair, and walked away from a brawl. But Mercutio, Romeo's dear friend, took his place, and they began to duel, ending with Tybalt's rapier in Mercutio's heart. And so Romeo, burning with rage, did avenge his friend's death, by staining these streets with Tybalt's blood afterwards."
Consequently, soon after the deaths of these citizens, Prince Escalus arrived on the scene, to assess the situation. The Capulet family argued that Romeo Montague should be put to death for the murder of Tybalt Capulet, while the Montague family argued that Tybalt would have been put to death by the law, even if Romeo had not murdered him.
Subsequently, the Prince made a compromise, banishing Romeo from Verona for life. When questioned on the subject, he responds, "Times have become difficult, and therefore, punishment has become more necessary. The violence in our streets must end."
A servant to the Capulet family insists that the end of this hatred and violence will not be in the near future. "This hate is rooted too deep to be forgotten anytime soon. Especially considering the fray that has occurred today."
Prince Escalus believes the opposite. "Perhaps seeing the losses they have made today, these families will understand the price of their hate," he says. "Perhaps we will finally see an end to this feud."
