Scotophobia

There were many things to hate in the Capitol Wasteland, the parched, barren, earth, the raiders, the unrelenting sun, the constant threat of being the dinner of a super mutant. But for the Lone Wanderer, Verea, one of the things she hated most about traversing the D.C. ruins was the old metro tunnels. It was always with a pang of trepidation that she had to enter those dark passageways, for they were the only way to travel the ruins easily. At least until the reconstruction was complete.

As a child, like most children tended to be, Verea was afraid of the dark. Thanks to the glitchy nature of Vault 101's reactor system, they were times when the vault's hallways were plunged into total darkness, save for the emergency lighting…sometimes for hours on end. These events always terrified a little girl of six years old.

The years went by and she grew up and the fear diminished. But Verea suspected that fear of the dark was one of those fears the never really fears anyone. It is human nature some say. And Verea is no exception to that. She always noticed how her heart began racing whenever she went down into the darkness. How she always jumped when she heard the terrible cry of the feral ghoul. No matter how many ferals she slew, that rasping cry and there horrible rotting faces coming out of the shadows always frightened her. It was not only the ghouls…there was something about the oppressing darkness of the subterranean world, The stale air and the strange howling that swept through the vast labyrinth.

She would never forget one of her trips into the underground, her third one, now that she remembered. She jumped at the sound of a sharp clink and expended a whole clip of her submachine gun at the source of the sound. When the smoke cleared she realized that she had only kicked an old milk bottle. Or at least what was an old milk bottle.

"Get a hold of yourself Verea! Its just an old subway tunnel, there's nothing down here!"

There was something down there. Something was down there, something much more dangerous than ghouls, raiders, or mutants.

Her fear…
