Author's Note: I've already read the first book, I haven't read Eldest, but I know what happens. Also, I don't believe that Morzan is Eragon's father. PLEASE NO FLAMES! Thank you to all of the people who reviewed "A Bitter Triumph." The song in this story is called "Lullaby" by Josh Groban.

Everything was ready. She knew exactly where she was going, how she was going to get there, and who she was going to stay with. What he had done was the last straw; she had to get away in order to save the baby. The baby. It wasn't even his, and that was more of a reason for her to get away. If he knew the truth, he would kill it, just like the way he had tried to kill Murtagh. She replayed the plan over and over in her head. She would head to Carvahall, have the baby, and…she stopped to wipe away a tear. You know what you must do. Just play it in your mind. You can't do anything to change it. Okay, she thought, here I go again. I'll head back home, have the baby, and leave it in my family's care. She knew that it was for the best. With Morzan out on the king's business, it would be easy for her to make a quick exit. Her only problem was if he made it back home alive, but it was a risk she was willing to take.

Before she went downstairs to head out into the open, she had to do one more thing. Something that would totally break her heart. She had to say goodbye to Murtagh. She headed towards the west wing and opened the door to his bedroom. The 3 year old laid on his stomach, steal healing from the wound that his father had given him. She slowly went to his side, and kneeled before him. She ran her hand through his dark brown hair. He looked more and more like Morzan everyday, a curse that would no doubt haunt him for the rest of his life. She held his hand, and placed a kiss on his head, and slowly got up. Then Murtagh began to stir. Oh no, please baby, don't wake up. Don't make this harder on me.

"Mama." he said as he opened his eyes. She got back down on her knees. "Shh. Go back to sleep baby." she whispered. "Mama, where are you going?" She sighed. "I'm going on a little trip, Murtagh. Mommy has some business to do just like daddy." She wanted throw up from saying "daddy." Morzan was no more a father to him then to the baby that she was concealing from everyone. "Can I go with you?" he asked. With a broken voice she said, "I'm sorry, baby, but you can't." "Please take me with you, mommy! Don't leave me alone!" With tears in her eyes, she got on his bed, and carefully gathered him in her arms. He wept as she rocked him back to sleep. Quietly, she began to sing to him, hoping that it help him fall to sleep faster.

Hush now baby don't you cry
Rest your wings my butterfly
Peace will come to you in time
And I will sing this lullaby
Know though I must leave my child
That I would stay here by your side
And if you wake before I'm gone
Remember this sweet lullaby

And oh, through darkness, don't you ever stop believing
With love alone, with love you will find your way
My love

The world has turned the day to dark
I leave this night with heavy heart
When I return to dry your eyes
I will sing this lullaby
Yes I will sing this lullaby

Suddenly, Murtagh stopped crying. His quiet breathing was the only sound that was being made in the room. Right then and there, Selena wished that she could stop time so she could stay in that position forever; carrying Murtagh in her arms and the baby in her womb, but this was it. She had to leave now. She carefully laid Murtagh down in his original position. She kissed him again. "Forgive me, my son."

She walked out of his room, and closed the door. She placed her hand on her stomach. "I promise that you will be happy where I am taking you. Remember, that I just want you to be safe." Selena headed downstairs, ready for the journey to a world that she now regretted leaving behind.
