Castiel watched the human celebrations on shore, feeling a loud sigh bubble from his throat. His sisters had cooed softly, their thin fingers stroking through his inky black hair as they tried to comfort him. They didn't understand his fascination with the human world, but at least they were more supportive than his father.
The merman sighed and dipped the tips of his blue fin into the ocean. There were large (what was the name again? Fires?) fires burning brightly on the sand; human silhouettes danced around the orange and red flames. Castiel closed his eyes against the lively music, feeling his mouth perk up into a rare smile while the tinkling sound of laughter reached his ears.
He was far too close to the shore than his father would be comfortable with, he knew, but Castiel didn't care. It was so strange and beautiful, the human world; they had inventions never seen before in his home. Fires that cooked strange foods, things that a human need to use to eat! Clothing that covered the humans' bodies, and strange little contraptions that covered the ends of their legs.
The merman flipped onto his stomach, propping his chin on his hand to watch as two humans, dressed very formally, were greeted by the crowd with applause. He cocked his head, watching as the two humans kissed sweetly, their action causing hoots and even more clapping.
One human was very tall with shaggy brown hair, while the woman he was linked arm in arm with was much shorter than he. She smiled up at him with such admiration and love that Castiel felt as if he was trespassing on a very private moment. The man-human picked her up and swung her in gentle arch, prepping her face with kisses while the music swelled.
Castiel smiled softly, giggling silently to himself at the strange actions. A human broke from the crowd, drawing Castiel's eye almost instantly.
He was much shorter than the tall human, but the merman could tell the two were related. The fire caught in his blond-brown hair, and caused his green eyes to flash; they flickered near to where Castiel was hidden away, and the merman held his breath, sure he had been caught.
The human turned his face towards the tall one, clapping him soundly on the shoulder; a large grin widened his plush mouth, and Castiel felt his face heat as he leaned closer.
Who was this human? Why was he so captivating?
The merman nearly fell from his perch, but managed to catch himself in time; the tips of his ears heated in a blush when he heard soft cackling in the water beside him.
The top of his brother Gabriel's head and eyes appeared from under the water. The older merman grinned as he slid next to the youngest of their school; wet fingers slipped through slowly drying ones and he squeezed. "You need to get a better hobby, bro." Gabriel drawled, his eyes flickering to the humans with slight interest.
Castiel hummed, not taking his eyes away from the captivating human. His brother made a small noise at being ignored; the younger of the two felt his hands being tugged. "C'mon Cassy; Dad's starting to wonder where you are, and I'm not gonna cover for you again!"
Blue eyes flickered to meet pouting gold, and he sighed. With one last woeful look at the human (who he was sure was now staring in his direction) Castiel slipped beneath the dark waves of the ocean to follow his brother.
